Alvin Hohbein

Alvin Hohbein, 87, of Ashby died Monday, June 10, 2019 at Knute Nelson Memorial Home in Alexandria.

It is with great sadness that the family of Al announces his passing on June 10, 2019.  Blessed with 87 years of a life well lived, he was born December 16, 1931 at Youngtown, ND, the third child of Alvin and Freda (Uhl) Hohbein. Preceded in death by his son Kevin, his parents, two brothers and three sisters. Survived by loving wife Bea (Bernice Schnaidt) of 69 years, sons Randall (Gayl) Cape Coral, FL and Sheldon (Martha) Eagan, MN; granddaughters Dr. Janae (Nick) Toussaint, Chicago, IL; Sarah (Michael), Kansas City, KS; Stephanie (Joe), Chanhassen, MN; and Hannah, Watertown, MN; sister-in-law Charlotte, many relatives and friends.

Al attended rural schools in Youngtown until his family moved to Bismarck, ND. An active member of the North Dakota National Guard, he served in the Korean conflict with the 164th Infantry, 47th Division, 1st Cavalry.  His employment in Bismarck, after completing his service, started in the dairy industry with Bridgeman-Russell; then Foremost Dairies in Fargo and Duluth; Franklin Dairies, Minneapolis; and Mid-America Dairies, St. Paul. Former owner of Short Stop Superette, Richfield, and North Star Dairy, Detroit Lakes. In the early 80’s he started a dairy brokerage business, Agri Foods. During his years in the dairy industry he was involved in the creation of the annual Minneapolis Aquatennial Milk Carton Boat Races. Known for his entrepreneurial spirit, he also created Shel-Bea’s Deli, which was located in the International Market Square building in Minneapolis for 33 years.

A resident of Plymouth, MN for 43 years, he found his retirement home on Pelican Lake, Ashby, MN.  He became involved in volunteer work, serving on various committees with the Ashby American Legion Pederson-Tripp Post 357, the Pelican Lake Association, and also served more than a decade as Chairman of the Pelican Lake Township.

Al enjoyed fishing, golfing, bird watching and many years of tailgating at the MN Vikings games. With his wife, he visited many countries but always returned to his favorite travel spot, Puerta Vallarta, Mexico.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the caring doctors, nurses, therapists and staff at Knute Nelson Rehab Center in Alexandria, MN.

Visitation will be held Thursday, July 11, 2019, 5-7 pm at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, 107 Main Street, Ashby, MN.  A funeral service will be held at 1pm on Friday, July 12 with visitation one hour prior at Peace Lutheran Church, 306 Larson Avenue, Ashby.  Graveside service and burial at 2:00 pm on July 13 at Judson Cemetery, Judson, ND.

He will be greatly missed by his family and special cat, Smokee.
