Obituary

Wendell Carmen Englund, 92, of Evansville, died Sunday, May 17, 2020, at the Brandon Assisted Living, Brandon, surrounded by his immediate family.  A drive-in style Celebration of Life will be held at his farm located at 13890 County Rd. 1 NW, Evansville on Saturday, May 23 at 11 a.m.  Those attending are asked to bring lawn chairs and maintain social distancing.  The event will also be live-streamed, if possible, on his obituary page at www.glendenilson.com, where condolences may also be left.

Wendell was born May 4, 1928 to Gustave Adolph Conrad Englund and Thresa Augusta (Bakken) Englund in Roberts County, South Dakota, near Rosholt.  Shortly after, the family moved to Evansville where he attended Lund Township School until the eighth grade.

He and Joan Emily (Hendrickson) were married September 18, 1965 by Rev. Vernon Serenius, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Evansville.  To this union, three sons, Jay, Jon and Devin were born.

Wendell was a life-long resident of the Evansville area, except for a two-year deployment with the United States Army, from 1954-56, while stationed in Germany as a quartermaster, during the Korean War.

Wendell spent his entire life working with his hands as a carpenter.  For 27 years, he worked for Carlson Construction, of Evansville, building homes and businesses around the region, including clinics and hospitals.  Later, he worked as a carpenter with his two brothers, Merlin and Harlan.

Wendell was able to live every boy’s dream, tearing down his own schoolhouse.  Much of the lumber was reused in his own home down the road, while Merlin built his own home where the school stood.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Joan; parents, and grandparents; his brother, Merlin; and numerous aunts and uncles.  He is survived by his sons, Jay Carmen (Nettie) Englund, of Alexandria, Jon Conrad (Carol) Englund, of Grand Forks, ND, and Devin Adair (Jenny) Englund, of Blaine; grandchildren, Amanda, Madison, Logan, Michael, and Margaret Englund; brother, Harlan (Marlys) Englund of Evansville and sister, Eme (Gary) Quinn, of Evansville, and numerous relatives and friends.

His urn bearers will be his grandchildren.

To protect the health and safety of all, services are currently being limited by state and local authorities and the CDC. Expressions of sympathy during this time can be left on the condolences page available with the obituary on our website.  We also encourage you to view the webcast of the service that may be available.  Check the funeral home website for the latest COVID-19 update.
