Warren Svendsgaard

March 22, 1928 — September 13, 2014

Warren Svendsgaard, 86, of Fergus Falls, died Saturday, September 13, 2014, at the Minnesota Veterans Home, Fergus Falls.

Warren Perkins Svendsgaard was born on March 22, 1928 in Elizabeth, Minnesota, the son of William and Florence (Perkins) Svendsgaard. He attended country school through the eighth grade in Elizabeth, at which time he started working on the family farm. Warren joined the United States Army on April 9, 1946, and served as a Quartermaster during the occupation of Japan during World War II. He was honorably discharged on August 9, 1947.

On August 8, 1964, Warren married Jeanette Loher in Chokio, Minnesota, and they resided in rural Erhard on the shores of Long Lake. Warren and Jeanette were blessed with six children.

Warren worked for the Perkins Brothers, Highway Construction Workers and retired from Mark Sand and Gravel, where he worked for forty years. Warren also worked for Elizabeth Township, grading roads and handling snow removal during the winter months.

He was a member of the Elizabeth Sportsman Club, VFW, Knights of Columbus, St. Elizabeth Men's Group, Long Lake Homemakers, and various card club "bunches". Warren loved to fish, hunt, cook, entertain, garden, and spent time in the woods at "the 40" cutting wood and processing maple syrup. He could often be found "putzing" around on his tractor. He was always up for a game of cribbage and a brandy-seven, and enjoyed time spent with his children and grandchildren.

Warren will be remembered for his generosity, willingness to help others, and the countless hours he volunteered at St. Elizabeth Church and the food shelf.

Warren is survived by his six children, Mark (Pam) of Erhard, Karen (Russell) Halverson of Twin Valley, MN, Kathy (Mark) Pask of Waconia, MN, Kurt (Deb) of Mahnomen, MN, Jean (Pat) Connelly of Fergus Falls, and Lisa (Bryan) Votaw of Fergus Falls; fourteen grandchildren, Amanda (Chad), DJ (Megan), Derek, Steven (Laura), Amanda, Brianna, Cassie, Tera, Shawn, Kaylah, Alexis, Caleb, Joseph, and Isaac; one great-grandson, Gavin; a sister, Alice Hovland of Fergus Falls; and special friend, Florence Merz of Fergus Falls.

In addition to his parents, Warren is preceded in death by his wife, Jan; a brother, James (Idella); and a sister, Lily (Henry) Wahl.
