Jean Marie Fjestad was born in Madelia, MN, the daughter of Otto and Donnis (Edlund) Fjestad. Jean grew up on the family farm near Carlisle, where she rode horses and was involved in 4H. She attended school in Fergus Falls, graduating high school in 1973.
Jean married Gaylen Skistad in Fergus Falls, and they were blessed with one daughter, Jenny.
She attended Alexandria Technical College for secretarial work, and later received her CNA certificate.
