James Voss

August 20, 1924 — August 27, 2013

James "Jim" Earl Voss, 89 of Fergus Falls, MN died Tuesday with his wife Delores by his side following a four month stay at Broen Home.

Jim was born on August 20th, 1924; the oldest of two sons raised by Gustav and Nina (Mellon) Voss on a farm west of Campbell, MN. He attended a rural elementary school near the farm and later graduated from Campbell High School with the Class of 1942. He learned to farm and take care of livestock by helping his Dad and Mother with all the chores that come with living on a farm. As a fairly young man, he cultivated corn using a team of horses, and later helped pitch bundles into the threshing machine at harvest time.

James married Delores Vorwerk of Doran, MN on October 28th, 1950. The newlywed couple bought the home farm where he was born and they lived there until 1993 when they moved to their new home in Fergus Falls. Besides farming and raising livestock and chickens, they raised four children. He and his brother Gilbert later farmed in partnership together and he also helped his brother for several years with his aerial spraying business. While living on the farm, James was an active member of Faith Community Church in Campbell. He served on the local Township board for several years, helping to keep the roads in traveling condition. He was also a Mason and a member of the Campbell Lions Club, and later joined the Daybreakers Lions Club in Fergus. Jim enjoyed music and played the trombone very well. He, his Dad (baritone) and brother (Clarinet) played in the Tri-State Band in Wheaton for several years, starting before and continuing after he married Delores. He would regularly sing songs at home on Sunday mornings while getting ready for church. He instilled the value of a good education and hard work to earn a living in his children.

After moving off the farm in the spring of 1993, Jim became active in their neighborhood. In 2001, he unexpectedly received a plaque of recognition for his good work from a special group of neighbors. He was an active member of Peace United Methodist Church. Jim had a special group of friends that he enjoyed swimming with at the YMCA. He also worked at the Food Shelf and helped deliver Meals on Wheels for several years. He also volunteered his time at the Holiday Clearing Bureau and First Call for Help. The annual Fourth of July family reunion at the Beckman cottage on Lake Marion, the August-born cousins' birthday celebrations at Lake Eunice, along with pheasant and deer hunting each fall were very special to him. Jim and Delores also enjoyed traveling to many different states and visiting relatives along the way whenever time away from the farm would allow. They also have many fond memories of staying at their camper trailer (sometimes with their oldest grandkids) at several different lakes east of Fergus.

James is survived by his wife Delores; his four children, Beverly (Paul) Davidson of Dallas, TX, Gary (Susan) of Byron, Illinois, Daniel of Denver, Colorado, and Barbara (Tim) Gorsegner of Palmyra, WI; five grandsons, Dana (Ashley Groves) Voss, Zachary Davidson, Andrew (April) Davidson, Samuel Davidson, and Sean Gorsegner; one great-grandson, Tristan Voss (Dana & Ashley); and a brother Gilbert (Ardella) of Breckenridge, MN. James was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter-in law, Carol (Schroeder) Voss (Dan), and a grandson Michael Voss (Gary & Susan).

The family wishes to thank all the care providers and staff at Broen Home for the loving care they provided during James' stay.
