Duane Olson

Duane Olson, 82, of Fergus Falls passed away Nov 4, 2017, at Lake Region Hospital, Fergus Falls, MN, due to a sudden heart attack. He had been walking 3-5 miles per day, and was very fit for his age.

Duane Lowell Olson was born Feb 5, 1935, in Elmo Township near Parkers Prairie, MN and was the 2nd son of Aldo and Lydia Olson.  His mother, Lydia passed away April 1945 from a brain aneurysm.  He grew up in the Henning/Parkers Prairie area and graduated from Parkers Prairie High school in 1954.

He left for the US Air Force the following week. He was stationed in Germany for 2 years.  Upon his return, he married Yvonne M. Koep, Sept 1, 1956. Duane attended the Mpls Business School while supporting his young family, graduated and started work at Northern States Power in 1959. He worked for NSP for 34 years in the Purchasing Dept and the Claims and Insurance Dept. He was involved in the Aqua Jesters, Junior Achievers, Speak Easy and the Wellness programs.

He coached his son Brian's Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball teams. After 34 years at NSP, he retired January 1992 at the rule of 90, just before his 57th birthday.  After retirement, they moved to a lake home on East Battle Lake in 1992. He became involved in the St Edwards Catholic Church Council and helped facilitate the building of their new church. A man who needed to stay active, he became the Girard Township Supervisor and worked as a Bailiff at the Ottertail County Courthouse simultaneously for 17 years. He 're-retired' in 2012 at age 77, and they moved from East Battle to Fergus Falls, MN.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Yvonne, 2 children, daughter, Joyce (Malasko), son-in-law Mike, children Nicole Grover, her daughter Erin and (Mat O’ Leary), her son Andrew Grover, his wife Kasie, and newborn daughter Gwendolyn, 11/5/17. And their son, Brian D. Olson, Jodi, son, Sam and Jessica Kankelfitz, and husband Mike Kankelfitz.  Brother Ronald Olson, wife Vivian, sons, Terry Olson, and Kevin Olson, wife Rhonda, son Robby, and his wife, Tanassa.

Mass of Christian Burial: 11 AM, Saturday, November 11, 2017, at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Henning.

Visitation: Friday from 5 to 8 PM, with a 7:30 Pm Prayer Service at St. Edwards Catholic Church

And one hour prior to the Mass on Saturday.
