Duane Carlson

March 11, 1939 — September 9, 2013

Duane Carlson, 74 of Battle Lake died Monday, September 9, 2013 at the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center.

Duane Merle Carlson was born on March 11, 1939 in Powers Lake, North Dakota the son of Harvey and Olga (Berg) Carlson. He was baptized and confirmed in Bethel Lutheran, Battle View. He attended Pleasant View School in Thorson Township, and graduated from Columbus High School in 1957. Duane continued his education at North Dakota State University in Fargo, graduating in December of 1962 with a Mechanized Agriculture and Ag Finance Degree. He served six years with the Air National Guard of Fargo as a Flight Simulator Technician.

Duane and Rachel C. Jensvold were married on September 15, 1962 in Bergen Lutheran Church, rural Lidgerwood, North Dakota. In September of 1964 he began his employment with Crookston Production Credit Association. He worked three years in Hallock, then transferred to the District Office in St. Paul where he traveled as a Credit Reviewer. In January of 1993 he retired with twenty-nine years of service. During his working years he volunteered three six-week assignments with ACDI-VOCA, two in Russia and one in Poland/Ukraine. Each assignment involved the development of private banking in post-communist countries. The family lived in Cottage Grove and in 1980, they built their home on Eagle Lake, rural Battle Lake, where they spent many weekends and vacations, eventually retiring there. In 1999, they sold their home and moved into an apartment in Battle Lake and in October of 2012, entered the Lakeview Senior Living. Duane was very active in church, both Zion Lutheran in Cottage Grove and Eagle Lake Lutheran by Battle Lake. He had served as Council Chairman of both churches and was involved with two building projects at Eagle Lake. He was on the first Battle Lake Food Shelf Board, carpentry and intake procedures being his responsibility. He was an active member of the Eagle Lake Lakeshore Association. "Papa Duane" dearly loved his seven grandchildren, taking in their many school and church activities. "No need to go SOUTH for the winter." A 13-day bus tour of Duane's Norwegian heritage was a highlight of later years.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel; children/grandchildren, Tim and Tammy, Emily, Elise and Eli of Battle Lake and Dan and Beth, Ashley, Megan, Braden and Christian of Battle Lake; brothers, Jerry and Eva of Lengby, Kevin and Lorna of Powers Lake, ND and Lowell and Pam of Portland, ND; brother-in-law, Charles and Gothe Jensvold of Detroit Lakes; nephews, Paul, Aaron, Eric, Jacob, David and Jonathan Carlson; nieces, Allison Rondesvedt, Kara Ringdahl and Tshedi Kgamane; step-sisters, Darlene and Bill Rose of Rothsay, Karen and Harvey Schneider of Fargo and Cheryl and Thom Schmid of Minot, ND; and by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
