Charles "Chuck" Maynard, 86 of Battle Lake died Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center.

Charles Burton Maynard was born on November 7, 1926 in Phelps, Kentucky, the son of John Wayne and Kentucky May (Charles) Maynard. In 1942, he entered the U.S. Navy at the age of fifteen and served during WW II in the European Theatre. He was honorably discharged on January 12, 1946 at the age of nineteen.

Chuck and Bernice Ratliff were married on April 4, 1946 in Kentucky. They were parents of four children, Charlie, Doug, Greg, and Janelle. They resided for eight years in Elyria, Ohio where Chuck worked for General Motors on the assembly line, then moved to Indiana where he worked for the G.P.F. Manufacturing Co. for several years. In 1954, at age twenty-eight, a friend invited him on a Wednesday night to a Baptist Church where the guest speaker kept asking Chuck questions about his spiritual life. When Chuck told him he wanted the real thing, the man led him in prayer to receive Jesus which changed his life forever. In 1957, they moved to St. Paul where he was employed with Lindsay Water Softener. Bernice passed away in 1971.

In 1974, Chuck and Dorothy Bergsten were married in St. Paul. They were the parents of one son, David. In 1978, they moved to Dallas, Texas to attend the Christ For The Nations Bible School to obtain a degree in Theology. Chuck worked ten years for Optic Electronics, manufacturing night vision equipment for the military. In 1988, Chuck and Dorothy moved to Battle Lake. Dorothy passed away in 2005.

Chuck ministered in over 170 prisons with Champions For Life throughout the United States, the largest being 15, 000 prisoners in the Cook County Jail in Chicago. He led well over 1, 000 prisoners to Christ. God always supplied Chuck's needs. Chuck also ministered in Costa Rica, Grenada, and South Africa. Chuck would leave his Legacy to his family and friends, "I'm just a nobody trying to tell everybody about a somebody who will get them to heaven." Chuck enjoyed fishing, old cars, Bible Study, Prison Ministry, playing guitar and singing, doing one-arm push-ups, and auction sales.

Chuck is survived by four children, Charlie (Linda) of South Carolina, Greg (Gail) of Battle Lake, Janelle of Texas and David (Sarah) of Texas; grandchildren, Michelle, Phillip, Jeff, Tracey, John, Melissa, Andrew, Sasha, Jessica, Allyson, Kelly and Ashlee; two great-grandchildren; two brothers; two sisters; along with numerous relatives and friends.
