Bernice Herness

Bernice J. (Mrs. Gordon) Herness, 98, of Ashby, died Thursday, December 14, 2017, at the Broen Home in Fergus Falls.

Bernice Josephine Herness was born on February 9, 1919 in Streeter, ND, the daughter of Charles and Effie (Peterson) Mandler.  She attended country school near Streeter through the eighth grade.  A short time later, Bernice moved with her family to Amor, MN, until she began working as a housekeeper and nanny in Fergus Falls.

On January 20, 1944, Bernice married Gordon Herness, and they were blessed with two sons, Roger and Glen.

Bernice and Gordon farmed and milked cows on their farm near Jolly Ann Lake, OtterTail County, MN.  In the early 1950’s, the family moved to Mountain Iron, MN, until 1961, when they returned to Ashby.  Bernice worked as a housekeeper at the Pelican Lake Nursing Home in Ashby, until retiring in 1991.  She continued to live in Ashby, until 2011.

In her spare time, Bernice enjoyed playing bingo, especially at the Ashby Legion; gardening, enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s events and babysitting them.  She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and was active with ladies aid and many church events.

Bernice is survived by her son, Glen of Moorhead; daughter-in-law, Shirley of Andover; grandchildren, Rhonda (Ken), Zachary (Cari), and Luke (Vicki); two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Carter; a sister, Nellie Jensen of Fergus Falls; two brothers, Lester Mandler of Hibbing, MN and Roy (Nancy) Mandler of St. Paul; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon; son, Roger; daughter-in-law, Ruth Herness; siblings and their spouses, Art (Irma), Florence (Art) Berg, and Hurley (Rose); a brother-in-law, James Jensen; and sister-in-law, Betty Mandler.

Funeral Service:  11 AM Monday, December 18, 2017, at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls, with visitation one hour prior to services.

Clergy:  Reverend Todd Hylden

Interment:  Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, Battle Lake, Minnesota
