Vergene R'Lou Lund, 84 of Evansville died Tuesday, January 5, 2021, at the Knute Nelson Home in Alexandria, Minnesota.
Vergene was born on April 25, 1936, in Alexandria, Minnesota the daughter of Robert and Vendina(Erickson) Kakac. Vergene attended school in Alexandria graduating in 1954. She worked for several years as a nurses aid at Bethany Home till she decided to become a nurse. She attended the first practical nurses training program at the Alexandria Technical College in 1961/62. After graduation and obtaining her LPN (nursing license) she worked at the Douglas County Hospital.
Vergene married Edwin Stanley Lund, Evansville, on June 12, 1965, in the Alexandria Covenant Church in Alexandria. They lived a short time in Evansville and then moved to their dairy farm where they resided for fifty years. Vergene took a short break from nursing to be mother to their two children, Todd and Sheila. When her children were in school, she returned to nursing at the Douglas County Hospital. She worked in the emergency room from 1972 till her retirement in 2006 and was well loved by those needing emergency service. People often commented how they felt more comfortable when she came in the room. Vergene was the one that the doctors would call on whenever children needed to be calmed down. Vergene was an excellent gardener and loved to grow flowers. She was also a wonderful cook and will be missed for her excellent cranberry relish.
Vergene is survived by her two children, Todd (Glenamarie Williamson) Lund of Lowry and Sheila (Randy) Boyd of Ashby; three grandchildren and one great-grandson, Maria (Jeremy) Boelen and Dean of Chicago, Nichole (Carl) Oberg of Elbow Lake and Josh (Lorena) Nylander of Japan; 9 sisters and brothers: Arlys Kakac, Alexandria, Joyce Kakac, Alexandria, Robert Kakac (JoAn) of Highland, Illinois, Arlan Kakac (Bonnie) of Horace, ND, Loren Kakac, Alexandria, Dan Kakac (Julie), Osakis, Kathy Nelson (Ronald) of Clitherall, Bruce Kakac (Theresa) of Alexandria and Patty Kakac (Joel Levie) of Evansville. Also, sister-in-law Mavis (Ardell) Hendrickson of Evansville; and by numerous relatives and friends. Vergene was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Vendina Kakac and husband, Stanley.
Memorial Service: 10 AM Saturday, January 9, 2021, at the Calvary Covenant Church in Evansville with visitation one hour prior.

Funeral Home: Glende-Nilson of Evansville assisted with the arrangements.
Interment: Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota
