November 17, 1938 — July 1, 2025

Dalton

Richard Hanson, a beloved member of the Dalton community, passed away on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at PioneerCare in Fergus Falls, MN, at the age of 86. Born on November 17, 1938, in Fergus Falls, MN, the son of Ole and Elvera (Tripp) Hanson, Richard lived a life dedicated to family, service, and the land he cherished.

Richard’s early life was shaped by the values instilled in him during his upbringing. He attended country school in Dalton and was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviors in Dalton. He took on significant responsibilities at a young age, stepping in to manage the family farm following the passing of his father. After the death of his mother, Richard moved to his grandmother's farm in north Dalton, where he continued his life’s work.

He was united in marriage to Inez Marie Martinson on January 22, 1965, in Brookings, South Dakota. They made their home in Dalton and were blessed with two sons, Randy and Daniel. After retirement Richard and Inez moved to the family farm in rural Dalton.

His commitment to his community was evident through his various roles, including working at Ray's Oil in Dalton and later with Ottertail County in Maintenance until his retirement. Richard was also a dedicated volunteer firefighter for the Dalton Fire Department and served on the City Council, including numerous terms as Mayor, demonstrating a steadfast dedication to public service.

Richard was known for his hard work, balancing the demands of farming with a passion for maintaining his property. He found joy in working with cattle and was particularly dedicated to battling the thistles that grew on his land. Richard enjoyed fishing and creating lasting memories at the farm with his grandchildren, whom he adored and spoiled without reservation. He had a special affection for his 1930 Essex, a testament to his appreciation for antique cars. His deep love for black labs shone brightly through his relationship with his beloved dog, Roxie.

A member of the Zion-Sarpsborg Church in Dalton, Richard served as a trustee, reflecting his strong faith and commitment to his community’s spiritual life.

Richard is survived by his children, Randy Hanson of Dalton and Daniel (Tracy) Hanson of Ashby, MN; his cherished grandchildren, Chalsey (Adam) Barry, Brett (Brittany) Hanson, Drew (April) Hanson, and Reed (Tiffani) Hanson; and great-grandchildren, Kylie Barry, Breck Barry, Charlie Hanson, Raelynn Hanson, Brooks Hanson, Ellie Hanson, and Hudson Hanson. He is also survived by his sisters, Virginia (Tony) Stumpf, Mazie (Jim) Wick, and Jewell (Mike) Hunter; and brothers, Loren (Nancy) Haglund and Bill Larsen along with his beloved dog, Roxie.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Ole and Elvera (Tripp) Hanson; his wife, Inez Hanson in 2023; two brothers, Norris and Allen, and two sisters, Deloris and Dorothy.
