Marlis Mae Baglien passed away on Thursday, August 20, at her home in Fergus Falls, MN. She was 85.
Marlis Mae Hunt was born on October 20, 1940 in Adrian, MN to Lester Hunt and Margaret (Buss) Hunt. She moved with her family from Adrian, to Park Rapids and then to Elbow Lake. She was baptized at First Presbyterian Church in Elbow Lake. She attended and graduated from Elbow Lake High School in 1958.
She married Harlan Quernemoen on May 7, 1959. They made their home in Minneapolis and then Fergus Falls. Two children were born to this union, Pamela Jean and Michael Harlan. She married Milton Baglien on October 4, 1966.
Marlis attended and graduated from Cole’s Beauty School in Fergus Falls. While in the cities she attended Normandale Community College in pursuit of an Associate’s Degree.
Marlis worked as a bank teller, hair stylist, home health care provider, and owned/operated the HiWay Inn Cafe in Fergus Falls. She worked at the Fergus Falls State Hospital as a cook for many years then transferred to Oak Terrace Nursing Home in Minnetonka, MN. She transitioned to the MN Department of Public Safety as a Public Service Technician until she retired in 2005. She soon moved back to Fergus Falls where she lived in her cozy little stucco home with her cat, Gracy, until her passing.
Marlis enjoyed trips to a number of the Cities suburbs and Duluth, often for the purpose of house/pet sitting. She enjoyed classic country music, Willie Nelson, and dancing. She was a sewer, a cook, and a quilter. She liked to refinish furniture and working outside mowing and growing flowers. She was an “organized” collector of scarves, blankets, clothing, quilts, tools and socks. Marlis even had a tote marked “empty container” filled with empty plastic containers (ha, ha, mom).
Marlis was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Lester Hunt, a sister, Marlene Ann Hunt, and a son, Michael Quernemoen.
She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Jacob (Francis Obowa), six
grandchildren, Tricia Riemer, Cole (Miranda) Obowa, Dylan Hartness, Maggie Quernemoen, Michael Brian Quernemoen, and Stephanie Quernemoen. Six great-grandchildren, Hayden, Weston, and Bryndle Riemer, Kolby, Holden, and Harper Obowa. A brother, Lennie (Marilyn) Hunt. An extra-special cousin, Jean Class, a few extended family and very special neighbors and friends.
We would like to extend a very heartfelt “thank you” to the caregivers from Vivie Home Care and Hospice. They made the past months bearable, filled with knowledge, caring, and compassion. Also, Glende-Nilson Funeral Home and Cremation Services for their help, care, and kindness.
There will not be a funeral per Marlis’ wishes. Part of her ashes will be scattered with the remainder buried at Union Cemetary in Elbow Lake next to her parents and sister.
Marlis was most proud of the home she scrimped, saved and owned for over forty plus years. She knew what she wanted and “she did it her way”. She will be so missed.
