Kathleen Ohman, 71, of Fergus Falls, died Saturday, March 7, 2020, at LB Broen Home in Fergus Falls.
Kathleen Marie Ohman was born August 22, 1948 to David and Clarice Ohman. Throughout her childhood, she lived in many different cities where she made friends, excelled in her schoolwork, played the flute, and put up with her younger siblings. In 1970, she began her studies at the University of Illinois, completing a B.S. in psychology, a master’s in social work (1972), and a Ph.D. in social work (1980). Between degrees she worked for the Department of Children and Family Services.
After completing her doctorate, Kathy began an illustrious teaching career, serving as a professor at both the University of Illinois and the University of Denver. While at DU she was also associate Dean of the School of Social Work. Kathy was a nationally recognized expert on child welfare and law for social workers. She was also very active in civic affairs in the communities she lived in.
After retirement in 2012, she moved to Fergus Falls, where she enjoyed reconnecting with extended family, as well as gardening, cooking, and sleepovers with her great-granddaughters.
Kathy is preceded in death by her father.
She is survived by her mother, Clarice Ohman of Fergus Falls; a daughter, Sharon; four grandchildren, Alisa (Curtis), DeVante, Serenity, and Ulysses; three great-granddaughters, Aubree, Beatrice, and Chloe; her sister, Sandy (John); and brother, John (Jean).
Memorial Service: 1:00 PM Friday, March 20, 2020, at United Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake, Minnesota.
In lieu of flowers, Kathy requests donations to The Ohman Scholarship Endowment Fund at the University of Denver or the Nature Conservancy.
