Frederick "Fred" Petersen

Frederick Petersen, 67, of rural Underwood, died Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at Lake Region Hospital surrounded by his family.

Frederick (Fred) William Petersen was born December 30, 1949 to Dale and Marguerite (Friederichs) Petersen in Breckenridge, Minnesota.  He grew up and attended school first in Pelican Rapids and when he was 9, in Fergus Falls.  Fred graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1969. He enlisted in the US Army and served in Germany and Viet Nam.  He was honorably discharged in 1972 and enrolled at Detroit Lakes Tech for auto body.  At this time, he was also in the National Guard.  Fred retired from the National Guard after over 20 years.  In 1975, he was united in marriage to Becky Hauge.  The couple made their home in Fergus Falls and to this union a daughter, Amy, was born.  Fred was employed at Medallion Kitchens, Barkley and most recently Ripley’s in Erhard.  He retired due to health reasons.  On July 7, 2007 he married Laurie Quam at their home near Underwood.  Laurie’s two sons, Matt and Wade Brekke became part of the family.  Fred became a second dad to Kris Swendsrud and Angie Taylor.

Fred enjoyed collecting cars and guns, watching NASCAR, visiting car lots, mowing his yard, shooting pool, and working on his cars at his brother Dave’s.  He loved his dogs, Norman and Bernie and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Laurie; daughter, Amy Petersen (Erik Henry) of Fergus Falls; step-sons, Matt (Kristi) Brekke and Wade Brekke of Fergus Falls; grandchildren, McKenna Brekke and one on the way, Hannah and Abby Swendsrud; mother, Marguerite of Fergus Falls; siblings, John Petersen of Battle Lake, Joyce (John) Bohn and Joan (Frank) Servantez of Fergus Falls, Steve (Ann) Petersen of Pelican Rapids, Roger (Betty) Petersen, Dan (Penny) Petersen, Mary (Ron) Anderson and Bill (Connie) Petersen all of Fergus Falls, Keith (Chae) Petersen of Colorado Springs, CO, Susan Martinson, Chris (Chad) Fick and Cheryl Petersen of Fergus Falls, Mike (Jamey) Petersen of Breckenridge, Kevin Petersen and Mark (Jill) Petersen of Fergus Falls, Jan (Tom) Hecker and Doug Petersen of Underwood, Deann Petersen and Beth (Nick) Kraft of Fergus Falls; sisters-in-law; Darlene (Gary) Westerhaug of Fergus Falls, and Carol (Ron) Ehlers of Elbow Lake; brothers-in-law: Jerry (Phyllis) Quam of East Grand Forks, Donald (Arlene) Quam of Fargo, ND and Roger (Barb) Quam of Tennessee and many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dale; brother, David; sisters-in-law Cheryl Petersen and Kelly Petersen and nephew, Brian Anderson.

Funeral Services: 11 AM, Thursday, November 30, 2017, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Fergus Falls.

Visitation: 5-7 PM, Wednesday, at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls with a Prayer Service at 6:30 - and one hour prior to the service at the church
