Darwin “Duke” Braaten, 83, of Elizabeth, MN, formerly of Bloomington, MN, died on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at his residence under the care of LB Hospice.

Darwin Palmer was born on June 17, 1936, in Sauk Centre, MN, the son of Palmer Melford and Margaret Elizabeth (Engle) Braaten. He attended school in Long Prairie, MN. Darwin married JoAnn Peterson in Minneapolis, MN and the couple were the parents of three children, Mark, Suzanne and Scott. He resided in Minneapolis and Bloomington. Darwin worked at Northern Star Co. in St. Paul as a route sales driver. After retirement, he moved to Elizabeth and owned and operated Dukes Place.

His hobbies included gardening, fishing, deer hunting, watching all sports from high school to professional levels, especially his families sporting activities. Darwin was an avid Fergus Falls Otters sports backer. He looked forward to his yearly family 4th of July picnic and Christmas get together. Darwin was a dedicated family man. He will be missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Palmer and Margaret; a brother, Gene Braaten; a sister Marilyn Creamer and a son, Steven Braaten.

He is survived by his special friend, Elizabeth Wiese of Elizabeth, MN; children, Mark (Annette) Braaten of Burnsville, MN, Suzanne (Kevin) Braaten-Marshall of Minneapolis, MN, Scott (Carrie) Braaten of Carlos, MN and Steven (Jonell) Sam of Red Wing, MN; 13 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; five brothers, Bob Braaten, Jim (Debbie) Braaten, Jerry Braaten, Dale (June) Braaten and Rick (Laureen) Braaten; six sisters, Rose (Vince) Bagley, JoAnn (Duane) Johnson, Delores (Jim) Matlock, Sharon (Darrel) Hoosline, Betty (Bill) Barber and Judy Braaten along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service: 12:00 P.M., Tuesday, October 8, 2019, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Elizabeth, with a memorial gathering one hour prior to the service at the church.
