May 13, 1936 — December 3, 2021

Evansville

Darrell D. Anderson, 85, of Evansville, Minnesota, passed away on Friday, December 3, 2021, at the Evansville Care Campus.

Darrell David was born on May 13, 1936, in Ottertail County, the 1st son of David and Evelie (Nelson) Anderson. Darrell was always doing something as a child. Making haystacks out of grass, making toys out of wood. He went to school district 52 and graduated from Evansville High School in 1954. He was very active in school activities such as FFA, class play, basketball and football. Darrell’s dad passed away when he was 14 and he helped with the farming until 1959.

On June 8, 1962 he married Carolyn Marie Ellwager (Nelson) at the First Presbyterian Church in Elbow Lake. After getting married they moved to the home farm and lived there until 2012 when they moved to town. They have three children, David Darrell, Dawn Marie and DeEtte Carol.

Darrell joined the Air National Guard and served for 9 years. He worked road construction until 1961, worked for Carlson Construction until 1965 and then started working for the Minnesota Department of Transportation where he worked for 32 years.

Darrell enjoyed farming, old John Deere tractors, snowmobiling in Yellowstone, woodworking and wood crafts. Darrell had a 57 Chevy with a corvette motor in it, which he did some drag racing with John Anderson, Roger Johnson and friends from other towns.  He helped with the Threshing shows in Dalton, Rollag and Albany. Darrell belonged to the Pioneer Power Tractor Club and helped with the Evansville Historical Foundation building the churches and railroad models.

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, brother Denton and wife, Carolyn.

He is survived by his special friend, Gerry Evavold;  three children, David (Natalie) Anderson, Dawn (Doug) Bitzan, and DeEtte (Troy) Johnson; grandchildren, Mahrie Ohren, Dallas Anderson, Chris (Anna) Anderson, Brandt Bitzan, Brianna (Sean) Bitzan, Dustin (Alexis) Parsons, Logan Johnson and Veronica Johnson; great grandchildren, Landon Bradshaw, Eisley Ohren, McCoy, Porter and Sawyer Anderson, Thatcher, Bennett and Collins Anderson, Kashton and Kreed Henneman and Blakely Parsons, along with numerous relatives and friends.

The family would like to thank Gerry Evavold for being Darrell’s special friend, they met while Darrell was a resident at the nursing home in Evansville in November 2013. Darrell recognized Gerry always working down the hall where she was head of housekeeping and thought, “I had seen her before”, the cute blonde from roller skating in Fergus Falls years ago. Conversations led to Mustang rides, which led to companionship, so Darrell was able to move back to his house. There was a special bond formed and held until his passing. We are forever grateful and will never be able to repay her for fulfilling dad’s life to the end.
