Daniel Winter

March 28, 1933 — September 12, 2010

Daniel Arthur Winter was born on March 28, 1933 in Breckenridge, Minnesota the son of Nicholas and Viola (Thiel) Winter. He attended school in Dwight, ND, St. John’s Catholic School in Wahpeton, ND, in Minneapolis, MN and graduated from the Wahpeton High School in 1951. He continued his education with one year at the Wahpeton Science School and in 1953 entered the U.S. Army where he served two years. After his discharge he returned to the Wahpeton Science School, earning a Printing Degree, where he played football, basketball and baseball.





He worked one year in Fesseden, ND, then began at Moorhead State University where he graduated with a Social Studies and History Degree. He then taught in Fertile, MN where he met his wife. Daniel and Carol Miller were married on June 14, 1961. They together had twin daughters, Kelly and Kay and in 1963 the family moved to Wahpeton where he started his teaching and coaching career at the Wahpeton High School, later becoming the athletic director, after twenty-seven years retired in 1990. Dan and Carol moved to their lake home on South Turtle Lake, rural Underwood, where they resided until moving to their present home east of Battle Lake. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, all sports and especially football which he refereed for many years. Dan liked local basketball and really enjoyed following his grandkids sporting events. In 1983-84 he was honored the Athletic Director of the Year, and in 1990 he was inducted into the NDHS Activity Association Officials Hall of Fame. Dan had been a member of the St. John’s Catholic Church in Wahpeton and now was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Battle Lake. He was a member of the Underwood American Legion, VFW and an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus.





On Sunday, September 12, 2010 Dan passed way at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls, Minnesota at the age of 77 years.





Dan is survived by his wife, Carol; two daughters, Kay (Kelly) Kyllo of Grandin, ND and Kelly (Tim) Miller of Wahpeton; grandchildren, Kelsey Miller and fiancé Tyler Kent both of Grand Forks, ND, Tyler Miller of Wahpeton, Kody and Konnor Kyllo of Grandin, KaLee (Dustin) Moen of Grand Forks and one great-granddaughter, Paislee Moen; one sister, Ellen (Jerry) Conzemius of Breckenridge; one aunt, Grace Littke of Wahpeton, numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nick and Viola Winter; sister, Connie; brother, Wayne; father and mother-in-law, Clarence and Adeline Miller; the family dog, Peppy and by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
