Anthony Marino Scander, affectionately known as Tony, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2025, at the age of 92, surrounded by his family, who loved him deeply, just as he had loved them.
Born on February 12, 1933, in Kelly Lake, Minnesota, to Anthony Marelic and Mary Louise (Garvonic) Scander, Tony’s life was one of steady devotion to his faith, his family, and everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.
Tony graduated from Hibbing High School in 1951 and went on to pursue his love of learning and music at St. John’s University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Education in 1956. He later continued his education at Bemidji State College, earning a Master of Science in English. Throughout his 35-year teaching career, Tony made a lasting impact on countless students in Engadine, Michigan; Velva, North Dakota; and the Elk River Public Schools in Minnesota. His dedication to education and his students was recognized with a Golden Apple Award for outstanding service.
Tony also answered the call to serve his country as a member of the United States Army from 1957 to 1959, at which time he was honorably discharged.
Yet of all his roles in life, the ones he cherished most were husband, father, and grandfather.
On July 6, 1963, Tony married Sylvia Ann Adkins—the love of his life and his partner in all things for nearly 62 years. Together, they built a full and meaningful life centered around raising their family, creating lasting memories with cherished friends, and exploring new places through their shared love of travel. Their relationship was marked by mutual support, dedication, and care, setting an enduring example of what a strong, successful marriage looks like. Their partnership became a model for their children and grandchildren, showing through both words and actions what it means to build a life together rooted in love, respect, and shared purpose.
Tony was incredibly proud of his children, Christine Margaret and Steven Anthony. They were not just a source of joy, but one of his proudest accomplishments. His love for them was steadfast and unconditional, guiding them through life with both humor and wisdom. He celebrated their triumphs, stood by them during challenges, and remained their biggest fan in all things.
As a grandfather and great-grandfather, Tony had a special gift for bringing joy and connection into the lives of those he loved. Whether giving tractor rides, taking the scenic “Dipsy Doodle” road just to make a drive more fun, hosting fishing trips and boat rides at the lake, sneaking treats to the family pets, or offering well-timed words of encouragement, he found countless ways to make each person feel seen, supported, and loved.
After raising his family in Ramsey, Minnesota, Tony and Sylvia retired to the shores of Ottertail Lake, a place that perfectly reflected Tony’s love of the outdoors and simple joys. There, he became affectionately known as “The Mayor of the Beach.” He was always the neighbor with the right tool for the job, advice for a home project, and, without fail, a pocket full of dog treats for every four-legged visitor.
A man of faith, Tony was a long-time member of St. James Parish, where he sang in the church choir and spent many Sundays at church alongside his wife and family. His faith was steady and lived out in quiet ways—through his service to others, his care for those around him, and the strong values he modeled each day.
Tony’s humor, intellect, and steady heart left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He taught us to work hard, to never give up hope, and to show love through action, whether it was lending a hand with a project, offering thoughtful advice, or showing up when it mattered most. His legacy is one of generosity, reliability, and unwavering care, a love that was returned to him many times over by the family and friends who will carry his memory forward.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Scander, daughter, Christine, son, Steven (Reatha), Grandchildren; Alisha Bell (Ryan), Travis Wilson (Madeleine), Alison Hunke (Ryan), and Kylie Applen, and seven great grandchildren: Briggs, Auri, Ariella, Ford, Hank, Sylvia, and Michael.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Mary Louise, and his older sister, Margaret (Marge) Kayfes.
A celebration of Tony’s life will be held Thursday, July 10 at 11:30 at St. James Catholic Church in Underwood, MN, with visitation beginning at 10:30. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Tony’s memory by helping a neighbor or offering a treat to a faithful dog passing by.
