Marie E. Johnson, 89, of Fergus Falls, died Friday, January 19, 2018 at the Broen Home.
She was born August 17, 1928 in Fergus Falls to Frank and Anna (Pedersen) Schmidt. She grew up in Buse and Orwell Townships and attended high school in Fergus Falls. On February 8, 1948, she was united in marriage to J. Russell Johnson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls. Marie was employed at Woolworths in Fergus Falls. She has been a member of Hope Lutheran Church since 1976 where she served as a former board secretary, education chairperson, and a Sunday school teacher for 24 years. She was also active as a leader with Bluebird and Camp Fire. Marie had her own daycare that she ran for 24 years. After retiring, she helped with Meals on Wheels and the Food Shelf. She was also responsible for the weekly cleanings of the church sanctuary and replenished the “Quiet Bags” with Marion Drager. Marie enjoyed the companionship of her cocker spaniel, Sunshine. J. Russell passed away on September 25, 1991.
Marie is survived by her four daughters: Sandra Walker, Beth (Stephen) Roehl, Marcella (John) Ugstad and Christine (Floyd) Mandelke Johnson; 15 grandchildren: Shaun (Laura) Walker, Brett Walker, Jamie (Lori) Roehl, Christopher (Ashlie) Roehl, Autumn (Aaron) Stanley, Hans (Carrie Kjellberg) Ugstad, Elias (Markie) Ugstad, Marija Ugstad, Jacob Ugstad, Jesse Ugstad, Cody (Molly) Mandelke, Cassidy (Stuart) Schiesser, Sarah (Jason) Robeck, Isaiah (Robyn) Johnson and Ami (Jake) Schultz; 28 great-grandchildren: Keenan, Samuel and James Walker, Autumn, Solaur and Emma Walker, Shelby and Carson Roehl, Anna and Jack Roehl, Ian, Jude and Nova Stanley, Vivienne and Cosmos Ugstad, Charlee, Easton and Dorothy Ugstad, Teekyn and Bensyn Mandelke, Bristol, Hadley and Danica Schiesser, Anna, Ethan, Seth and Benjamin Robeck and Henry Johnson; and two sisters: Adeline Rose and Arlene Erlandson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, J. Russell; son-in-laws, John W. Walker and James M. Mandelke; a granddaughter, Melody Ugstad and two brothers, Edward Schmidt and Alvin Schmidt.
Memorials are preferred to Hope Lutheran Church or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
Visitation: One hour prior to the service.
Service: Monday, January 22, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Hope Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls.
