Virgil Starin

G. Virgil Starin, age 90, of Fergus Falls, died Monday, August 6, 2012, at the Sanford Health Palliative Care Unit, Fargo.

Virgil Starin was born March 26, 1922 near Battle Lake, Minnesota the son of Max and Martha (Brandt) Starin. He attended rural School Dist. #45 in Everts Township, rural Battle Lake then at Battle Lake High School for one year. In 1942 his father died and Virgil took his place at Ottertail Sanitarium to help his mother support the family. In September 1943 he entered the U.S. Navy serving as Pharmacist's Mate Third Class aboard the USS Solace, a hospital ship treating the wounded during WW II. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on December 14, 1945. In 1948 Virgil attended Dunwoody Technical College in Minneapolis where he earned a Welding Certificate.

Virgil and Bernice Ness were married September 17, 1949 in Dalton. They lived in the Fergus Falls area where he was employed with the Fergus Dairy. In 1952 he was employed as Chief Engineer with the Maple Dairy in Waconia until 1956 when they moved to Lewiston, Idaho where he worked for Potlatch Forest, Inc. In December 1957 Virgil returned to Minnesota and worked for Maple Dairy until it closed in 1960. In April 1960 he went to work for the Fergus Dairy, which became Mid-Am Dairy and retired in 1979. In 1980 Virgil went to work at the Pioneer Home for 4 years in their maintenance department.

As a child, Virgil enjoyed swimming and fishing while visiting his grandparents (Adam & Eve Starin) who owned a resort on Otter Tail Lake. He especially loved fishing with his Grandfather. Virgil's wife, children and grandchildren were the loves of his life. He enjoyed family picnics, gatherings, holidays and reunions. Virgil was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls.

Survived by his wife, Bernice; children, Janice (Ted) Dahl of Royalton, Carol Fiske of Loveland, CO, Max (Tracee) Starin of Rothsay, Donna (Tim) Richmond of Picayune, MS and Paul Starin of Dalton; grandchildren, Mike Neumann, Casey (Kyla) Fiske, Jessica Dente, Alicia Boettger, Scott (Shana) Starin, Jeremy (Melanie) Starin, Melissa (Scott) Richmond and Jason Richmond; great-grandchildren Cassandra and Grace Dente, Connor Starin, Gavin Starin, Kallie Starin, Shjon Rogers; daughter-in-law, Lynette (Jeff) Starin of Erhard; two sisters, Betty Collins of Kingsport, TN and Colleen (Bud) Garberg of Billings, MT; one brother, Allen (Louise) Starin of Pomeroy, WA; brother-in-law Al Thiel of Fergus Falls; sister-in-law Sandy Starin of Benton City, WA and by numerous relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Margie Starin; one brother, Glenn Starin and one sister, Lois Thiel.

Funeral Service: 10:30 am, Thursday, August 9, 2012, at the Hope Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls.
Visitation: 5-7 PM Wednesday at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home with a prayer service at 6:30 PM.
Clergy: Rev. Jon Olson and Pastoral Assistant Allen Westby
Military Honors: Minnesota National Guard
Interment: 4 pm Thursday at the Knollwood Memorial Gardens, rural Fergus Falls
