Verna Braud

July 21, 1921 — April 15, 2015

Verna Bernice Braud, age 93, died on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center surrounded by her family.

Verna was born to Severt and Sophie (Larson) Smedsrud on July 21, 1921 at St. Luke's Hospital in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. She was baptized at the Smedsrud home farm in Tordenskjold Township. She was confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church rural Dalton. She later became a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, rural Battle Lake. She attended country school District 34 and later District 285. She grew up in Tordenskjold Township.

She worked at the Otter Tail County Sanitorium and worked for various families as a housekeeper and caregiver.

After her mother passed away, Verna helped care for her younger siblings.

On December 30, 1950 Verna was united in marriage to Ruben Braud at Bethel Lutheran Church. Ruben and Verna farmed together for many years. Ruben passed away October 26, 2007.

Verna was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school and was superintendent. She was a member of the Ladies Aid and served as an officer for many years. She also was active in 4H and was a leader.

She enjoyed flowers, loved to cook and bake and loved having family and friends visit. She enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren.

She is survived by her four children, Roland (Diane) Braud, LuAnn (Larry) Martinson, David (Debra) Braud and Linda (Paul) Roberts; ten grandchildren, Tanya (Eric) Carter, Travis (Melanie) Braud, Todd (Holly) Braud, Laura (Justin) Bohan, Andrew Martinson, Amanda (Joshuah) Cook, Stephanie Braud, Wynn (Anna) Roberts, Conrad (Lisa) Roberts, Kelci Roberts (Edwin Lundquist), eight great-grandchildren, Easton Carter, Ava and Aiden Braud, Audrey and Claire Bohan, Cameron Cook, Odin Braud and Morgan Verna Roberts; a sister Ruby Vogel, brother Milton Smedsrud and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and siblings, Arvid Smedsrud and Orva Ann Buisman.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Funeral Service: 1:00 PM, Saturday, April 18, 2015, at Bethel Lutheran Church of rural Battle Lake.

Clergy: Pastor Todd Hylden

Interment will be in the Bethel Church Cemetery
