Tillie Nelson

October 29, 1922 — September 29, 2010

Tillie Nelson, age 87, of Battle Lake, MN died Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center.

She was born October 29, 1922 at her homestead in Leaf Mountain Township of Otter Tail County to John and Mary (Larson) Klimp. She attended school at District 176 with perfect attendance. She was baptized and confirmed at Leaf Mountain Lutheran Church. She had a strong faith in Jesus and was very active at Faith Haven and with the quilting ladies at church. On June 17, 1941, she was united in marriage to Helmer (Shorty) Magnuson. To this union one son was born, Donald Richard Magnuson. They built and operated the Big Winnie Motel and Steak House in Bena, MN. They operated this business for ten years. Shorty passed away on June 5, 1964. In 1966, Tillie and Donald moved to Henning. Tillie cared for John and Jim Kent after the death of their parents in 1972 and considered them her boys too. She worked at the Moen Inn in Battle Lake and various other restaurants. She was united in marriage to Anton Nelson on June 3, 1978. The couple made their home just south of Clitherall. Anton passed away on April 17, 2001.

Tillie was a current member of Eagle Lake Lutheran Church. Her laughter was her treasure. Tillie always had a smile for everyone and loved her time with family and friends. Being paralyzed for 30 years, Tillie remained very active. She enjoyed attending church services, baking at the Good Samaritan Center, where she was a family member for ten years as she considered everyone there to be her second family, quilting, bingo, puzzles, music, cross-stitch and using the yarn wheel to make hats and scarves. And we cannot forget the Tootsie Rolls - she always made sure everyone had their sugar fix! She loved to have people visit her and sign her book so she could show others who came to visit.

She is survived by her son, Donald (Diana) Magnuson of Henning; two grandchildren: Alex and Amy Magnuson; one step-grandchild, Nicole (Chris) Lalum; one step-great-grandchild, Cayden Thomas Lalum; five nephews: Clayton Magnuson, Charles (Karen) Magnuson, Curtis Magnuson, Clifford Magnuson and Craig Magnuson and many great-nephews and nieces and a host of friends; one sister-in-law and good friend, Vivian Ratliff. She is also survived by Anton's children and their families: Wayne (Mary) Nelson, Michael Nelson and Linda (Allan) Selvaag. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, one sister, Selma Magnuson and four brothers: Edwin, Elmer, Henry and Alex.
