Norma Hoff

February 15, 1931 — February 26, 2011

Norma Hoff, 80 of Ashby passed away Saturday, February 26 at the Pioneer Care Center in Fergus Falls.

Norma Marie Hoff was born on February 15, 1931 in Ashby, Minnesota the daughter of Oscar and Geneva (Walseth) Belcourt. She grew up in Ashby and graduated from the Ashby High School in 1951.

On February 23, 1952 Norma and Myron L. Foshaug were married and they lived in Dalton. Myron died August 8, 1964, and after his death Norma and girls moved to Fergus Falls where she began employment with Woolworths.

On January 28, 1967 Norma married Joseph S. Hoff. Three years later they welcomed a son. Norma was a farmwife and homemaker who enjoyed flowers and gardening, and was known for distributing her garden goods to family as well as filling her basement shelves with canned goods. Norma loved her grandchildren, which she called her "lump of sugars". She would drink lemonade with them on the farm porch while eating the strawberries they would pick together in early July. She also taught her grandchildren to be masters of the game of Skip-bo. The grandsons remember Grandma whipping up their favorite treat for every special occasion. Norma adored baking; she enjoyed looking through cookbooks in search of good recipes with her granddaughters and was known for her baked goods which she always made in abundance. Norma enjoyed reading, swimming, quilting, and shuffleboard. She loved to entertain and be a farm wife along with having coffee with her friends. Norma and Joe together enjoyed wintering in Arizona in avoiding the cold Minnesota winters with family and friends. In the forty-four wonderful years they spent together, one of the activities she most treasured was to sit on the swing and enjoy the afternoon with her husband. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church where she was active with the Ladies Aid and quilting. Along with being a homemaker, she had worked at the City Restaurant and also cooked at the Peterson hunting camp. Norma spent a short time in the Pioneer Care Center, and her family is thankful for Pastor Tom Junkert, Chaplain Harry Olson, and the wonderful and caring staff at the home.

Norma is survived by her husband, Joe; four children, MaryAnn (Harlan) Balgaard of Ashby, Barbara (Gary) Ohren of Ashby, Sandra (Jim) Grandy of Brooklyn Center and Peter (Heidi) Hoff of Ashby; ten grandchildren, Samuel (Heidi) Balgaard, Karley, Jill, & Allison Balgaard, Justin & Ashley Ohren, Matthew (Nikki) Grandy, Andrew Grandy, Miles & Matson Hoff; 4 ¾ great-grandchildren Lily & Baby Balgaard (due in May), Keira Ohren, Trinity & Isabella Grandy; and by one brother, Frank (Emmy) Belcourt of Arizona. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Myron; twin sons, James and John and by one sister, Margaret.
