Noble Hatling

January 7, 1930 — March 11, 2017

Noble Hatling, 87, of Fergus Falls, passed away on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.

Noble was born January 7, 1930 in Dalton, MN, the son of Noble Sr. and Nora Hatling. He attended Dalton Elementary School and graduated from Fergus Falls Washington High School. Following high school, he enlisted in the Army in 1949. He was honorably discharged in 1951, having earned the rank of Sergeant. He married Betty Mae Woessner on September 20, 1952 at West Elbow Lake Lutheran Church; their marriage was blessed with three sons: John, Michael and William (Bill), and they eventually settled in Fergus Falls.

Noble began working at Otter Tail Power Company the summer of 1951 as an apprentice lineman. He advanced to Service Representative and later became the Director of Marketing, working in that position until his retirement in 1992. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and collecting firearms. In his retirement, he volunteered various places, including the Fergus Falls Food Shelf, Meals by Wheels, Adams Elementary School, Fergus Falls Rifle & Pistol Club, and the Veterans Walk of Flags. He loved being a grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his ten grandchildren. Noble served on the board of the Public Library and was instrumental in building of the current facility. He was a life-long member of the American Legion and served as the Commander of the Legion in Fergus Falls, Pelican Rapids, and Dalton. He was an avid reader and shared his love of reading with students at Adams Elementary School for many years, reading with 2nd and 3rd graders. He loved to sing in barbershop quartets, and could always be counted on for an Ole & Lena joke or the most recent "news" from Dalton. He was an excellent storyteller and could tell a story that would get any crowd laughing.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Mike of Minneapolis and his children, Aaron, Amanda, Andrew and Abigail; son, Bill (Kim) of St. Cloud and children Maxwell and Hannah; daughter-in-law, Kathy of Fergus Falls and her children, Anne (Philip) Hintz (and their children), Elizabeth, Jacob, and Maren; and his sister, Gwen Zeise of Deer Creek. He was preceded in death by his son John; and baby grandson, Joseph.
