Morris D. "Morrie" Heyen, 87, of Spring Park, MN, formerly Fergus Falls died on Saturday, May 11 at the Lake Minnetonka Shores Home in Spring Park.
Morrie, an avid fisherman and hunter left us to be with his heavenly family on the Minnesota fishing opener, May 11, 2013. He was born, August 4, 1925 and lived in the Fergus Falls area most of his life. He graduated from Fergus High in 1943 and after serving as second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps he graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1948.
Morrie married Kitty, his high school sweetheart in June of 1948. His careers included salesman for Mutual Dealers Wholesale, Ebersviller Implement and managed Sherwin Williams paint store before purchasing the Hamm's Beer Distributorship in Fergus Falls and establishing Heyen Distributing, selling Hamm's and Miller beer. Morrie sold his business in 1981, retiring at the age of 55 and spending his golden years with Kitty on Ottertail Lake.
Morrie was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church. He was also an outstanding civic leader serving as past president of the Jaycees, the Elks Club, Ottertail Lake Property Owners Association, Masons, the Birak Shrine Club and Fergus Falls Ducks Unlimited. In 1984 when Morrie served as President for Ducks Unlimited, the Fergus Falls chapter had the largest membership in the state. In 1992 he received the Potentates Medal for outstanding service from the Birak Shrine Club. Morrie also worked on the board to help bring the community college to Fergus Falls, served on the Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of Rotary and Kiwanas.
In addition to his civic organizations, Morrie was an avid hunter, fisherman, trap shooter, motorcyclist, dancer and boogie-woogie piano player. He could often be found sharing coffee with friends at a local hangout. He went by other alias' such as Morrie McDuck by his coffee buddies, the Loon Ranger for Ottertail Lake when he helped with the loon census and the Phantom of the Lake with his commentary in local newspapers. Morrie was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed teaching his grandkids how to fish. Morrie was a gifted marksman, enjoying many years at the trap shooting range at Pebble Lake. Most of all, Morrie loved to hunt ducks and geese accompanied by his faithful dogs; Rusty, Barney, Mandy and Chamois.
Morrie had many friends and his sense of humor, practical jokes and kind demeanor will be missed. Everyone who knew him has a story to tell. We will all miss him for his vitality for life, the love he had for his family, and his devotion to God.
Morrie and Kitty were blessed with three daughters, Gina (Philip) Carlson, Karen (Dave) Lindberg and Pam (Terry) Jensen. They have 8 grandchildren, Jade (Samantha) Synstelien, Rory (Naomi) Synstelien, Dylan Carlson, twins Andria and Adam Lindberg, Katie Jensen, twins Ally and Maddie Jensen and 3 great grandchildren, Kimana, Dayson and Jack.
Morrie is survived by his wife and family, sisters-in-law Jessie Heyen and Nancy Ebersviller, brother-in-law Rodney Ebersviller, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Luella Heyen, his brother Jerry Heyen, In-laws, Lorraine and Norm Galloway, Gordon and Mary Fran Ebersviller, Bill Ebersviller and Bobbie Ebersviller.

Visitation: 5-7 PM Thursday, Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls - and one hour prior to the service at the church with Masonic Service at 6:30 PM
