Mildred "Milly" Cockrum, age 86, passed away on Friday, January 2, 2015 at Sanford Medical Center surrounded by family.
Mildred Alvina Cockrum was born October 6, 1928 to Amanda and Adolph Skramstad in Nome, ND. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Petri Lutheran Church. Her childhood was spent on a small farm outside of Nome with her brothers Lawrence and Wilfred Skramstad.
On June, 20, 1948 she was united in marriage to William James Cockrum on the Skramstad farm in rural Nome, ND. They made their home in Nome and on November 15, 1951 they welcomed daughter Annette Gail. In 1967 Bill and Milly moved to rural Enderlin, ND. In 1974, Milly and Bill purchased a beef cattle farm located on Dead Lake.
Milly was a fiercly independent lady who enjoyed both flower and vegetable gardening, riding her lawn mower, spending time with her family, granddaughters and great-grandchildren, crossword puzzles, needlework, reading true crime novels and frequently going home to North Dakota where she claimed the "air is always better". Milly also enjoyed antique stores, attending auctions and refinishing family treasures.
Mildred is survived by her daughter Annette (Wes) Maudal; two grandaughters, Amanda (Ryan)and Kathy Jo (Leon) Pfingsten; five great-grandchildren Andrew, Seth and Bree Sansness and Hallie and Reed Pfingsten; sister-in-law, Jean Peterson; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Milly in death are her husband William "Bill" Cockrum, mother and father Amanda & Adolph Skramstad, and two brothers Lawrence (Cecelia) and Wilfred (Ellen) Skramstad.
Visitation will be held at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Battle Lake from 4-7 pm on Tuesday, January 6. On Wednesday, January 7 a prayer service will be at St. Petri Lutheran Church in rural Nome, ND. Memorials are preferred to the American Heart Association.
