Lillian Cushman

June 28, 1914 — September 1, 2012

Lillian Maude Cushman was born on June 28, 1914 , one of six children to Martha (Knutson) and Lars Vinji in Sacred Heart, Minnesota. She was confirmed (January 8, 1928) at the Saron Lutheran Church in Montevideo. Lillian married Roger W. Cushman. They were later divorced. They made their home in Duluth, Montevideo, and the Granite Falls area.
Lillian later moved to Maine Township and lived with Sarah and George Mullen over a period of many years. She provided the care and assistance that they needed as they grew elderly. She was a devoted member of the St James Catholic Church and ladies circle group.
In 1977 Lillian moved to Fergus Falls. She became a member of Our Lady of Victory, Catholic Daughters and was active in the circle group.
After moving to Fergus Falls she enrolled at the Fergus Falls Community College to complete her Certified Nursing Assistance Program. She had over the years taken correspondence course with a college in Chicago. She was a voracious reader, loved to garden, cook sew, and let people know she was thinking of them. She never missed an opportunity to send a card wishing you well, birthday cheers, sympathy, or peace for the holiday season.
One of Lillian favorite inspirational sayings.
~ What you are is God's gift to you. What you make of yourself is your gift to God. ~
She carved out a life that had purpose, of hope, and of great faith. Lillian lived her life as one of Gods great servants. Lillian's favorite time was Christmas. She loved the opportunity to be able to give to someone else. However, Lillian never needed to wait until Christmas to share a gift. You would often see her walking, carrying bags of groceries to be delivered to the Salvation Army or to someone else she thought in need. She had great generosity in her heart. She worked countless hours braving the freezing cold and the blowing wind as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army. She rang the bell so that the homeless could find shelter. She rang the bell, so that the hungry could find a meal, she rang the bell, so that those in need of support could find assistance. She rang the bell, so that others could have Christmas. 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." Matthew 25:31-46
