Laura Hoff

March 21, 1932 — March 2, 2015

Laura Hoff, 82 of rural Underwood formerly of Ashby died Monday, March 2, 2015 at her home, surrounded by her family, under the care of Lakeland Hospice.

Laura Dorthea Hoff was born on March 21, 1932 in South Shore, South Dakota the daughter of Otto and Elizabeth (Hurley) Adolphsen.  She graduated from Marietta High School in 1950.  She then worked for Swenson Electric and Pool Insurance in Madison, had a bookkeeping job at Larson & Son International dealership and then was employed with Ned Hall as a Deputy Clerk of Court for Lac Qui Parle County.

Laura and Robert Hoff were married on June 21, 1958, in Ebenezer Evangelical United Brethren Church in Madison, Minnesota.  One year later they moved to Ashby where they opened a TV and Appliance Store.  She did the bookkeeping and was able to be at home when the children were young.  She later went to work for Great Plains Gas Co. in Fergus Falls.  Bob and Laura moved to St. Paul to be caretakers of an apartment complex and later managed it.  Because of health problems they returned to Ashby where Laura sold pull tabs.  Laura inherited a love for pretty dishes from her mother and grandmother, having a lot of old pieces from her family and enjoyed collecting.  She enjoyed quilting and made hand stitch quilts for the weddings of each of her children, made quilts for Peace Church bazaar and would also help stitch a quilt every year which would go to Luther Crest in Alexandria for their quilt auction.  Laura spent her days quilting, ladies aid meetings, tending to her flowers in the yard and more quilting.  She enjoyed her children and their families, babysitting the grandchildren and helping with their needed errands.  Laura felt fortunate that her children were nearby, seeing them often and having all holidays spent together. She was well known for her meticulous work in quilting and crocheting. Laura was very pleased to pass on her cooking and crafting to the family and friends she loved so well. Though she battled chronic illness for many years, she lived with a strength and grace that is unmatched.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; four children, Coleen (Sherlock) Houge of Underwood, Jim (Holly) Hoff of Battle Lake, Dan (Kathy) Hoff of Alexandria and Kathleen (Dale) Alstead of Evansville; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, Austin (Kathy) Christianson and Kayden, Harmony (Tony) Larson, Melody, Levi and Aria, Travis (Ashley) Hoff, Blake, Owen and Chase, Dereck (Megan) Houge, Jason (Emily George) Johnson, Ashley (Adam Taylor) Alstead, Amanda (Casey Black) Johnson, Amber Alstead and Alea (David Stoll) Alstead; and by numerous relatives and friends.  Laura was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Elizabeth Adolphsen; granddaughter, Amanda Hoff; and by two brothers, Dale and Melvin Adolphsen.
