Lina Joy Bond, 73, of Battle Lake, MN, was called home to our Lord unexpectedly Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Lake Region Health Care in Fergus Falls, MN by an aneurism in a vein that caused her heart to stop.
Joy was born in Sewickley, PA to Frank and Effie (Kirkpatrick) Powell May 3rd, 1940. She learned the love of music at a young age and started playing piano in third grade. He father was a violinist. She graduated from high school in 1958 and attended Houghton College in Houghton, New York, where she majored in music (piano and organ). She then taught elementary and junior high music in Plattsburgh, NY from 1962 – 1964 and in North Tonawanda, NY from 1964-1969.
She became engaged to Richard "Dick" Charles Bond on October 7, 1967. They were married on April 12, 1968. They then moved to Lyons, Colorado. While in Lyons, she had two children, Frank in 1971 and Alisa in 1973. In Colorado she provided organ music for and sang in the choir for the Old Stone Church and the Lyon's Congregational Church. In 1973, her mother Effie came to live with her family after her father passed away.
In 1978 they moved to the Upper Midwest and bought a chicken farm near Long Prairie, MN that held 30, 000 chickens who layed 129, 000 eggs every day! She learned to pick a lot of eggs and farm. In Long Prairie, she was the organist, and choir director for the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed having her mom (Effie) and her daughter (Alisa) sing in choir and during church service with her.
In 1987 they moved to Detroit Lakes, MN where she became the organist, choir director, and member of the Congregational Church. She worked as a substitute teacher and at Central Market in the Deli. There she met Doris Schermerhorn. Doris and she became co-owners of the Whistle Stop Café in Hawley from summer 1992 thru September 1997. Joy and Dick moved to Hawley and she became the organist at Edgewood Methodist Church in Fargo, ND.
At this point in her life she became aware of her calling – "long term care", as she was able to utilize all her talents of teaching, organization, creativity, and music to help others. She became the Activity Assistant at the Good Samaritan Home in Barnesville, MN. Shortly after that she became certified to serve in multiple capacities. She then worked as Therapeutic Recreational Coordinator at Bethany in Fargo for two years. She then assumed the position of Activity Director at Sergeant Manor Health Care in Foreman, ND. After receiving the job in Foreman, she and Dick moved to Leonard, ND.
Joy started at Battle Lake Good Samaritan in 2000 as Activity Director. She and Dick then moved to Ottertail, MN where she became the organist at the Perham Methodist Church and the Congregational Church in Wadena. After her husband's passing in 2006, she continued to work at Good Sam, and in July of 2011 moved to Battle Lake.
Joy's hobbies included creating cakes and in 2005 she started to decorate cakes for the residents of the nursing home, which she continued until her death. She also loved cooking, decorating, playing music both on the piano and the organ and church.
Joy is survived by her brother, Alan (Sheryl) Powell of Swartz Creek, MI; sister-in-law, Joan Powell of Janesville, WI; her children, Frank (Cindy) Bond of Sebeka, MN and Alisa (Randy) Wold of Detroit Lakes, MN; and her grandchildren, James, Wyatt and Hailey Bond and Megan Wold. She also has various nieces and nephews including: Reid (Carol) Powell, Pam Heard, Rendean (Duane) Seefeldt, Debra (Robert) Butler, Donna (Dave) Niemczyk, Frank (Jennifer) Powell, and Janelle (Mark) Simmonds. She was preceded in death by her parents; a half-brother and her husband.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to a memorial in Joy's name for the First Lutheran Church Pipe Organ Fund to continue on her legacy of filling the pipes with organ music for years to come.
Visitation: 6 – 8 PM Tuesday, with a 7:30 PM Prayer Service at First Lutheran Church, Battle Lake. Visitation resumes one hour prior to services at the church.
