John Hatling

John A. Hatling, 58, of Fergus Falls died Saturday, July 5, 2014 at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.

He was born December 1, 1955 in Pelican Rapids, MN to Noble and Betty (Woessner) Hatling. He grew up in Fergus Falls and graduated from high school there in 1974. He earned a degree in journalism from Moorhead State University and then went on and earned a degree in music from Concordia College in Moorhead. He later earned his Juris Doctor with distinction from the University of North Dakota School of Law. John was united in marriage to Kathy Benner in Fergus Falls on February 12, 1983. The couple eventually made their home in Fergus Falls. John and Kathy had five children.

John shared his passion for music with his children from the moment they were born. He enjoyed church activities and watching football and baseball. He was always in a musical group including, but not limited to, Calypso, What's Next, Canaan the Promised Band, Good Ol' Boys, Common Ground, Red Jazz, Fodeberd, Motu, Central Lakes Symphony, Center Singers, the Wendy and Linda Show and he was the current director of the Federated Church Praise Band. John also took every opportunity he could to improve his golf game and was very proud of his current handicap. He fully embraced life and gave people the freedom to be themselves. John's faith was very important to him, a trait that was passed along to his family and throughout life's challenges, his faith supported him. John added lightness and humor to every situation, his "deck" always had an extra joker in it. He was very devoted to his family, both natural and adopted.

John is survived by his wife, Kathy of Fergus Falls, his children, Anne (Philip) Hintz and their children, Shepherd and Audra of Fergus Falls, Elizabeth Hatling of Fergus Falls, Jacob Hatling of Moorhead and Maren Hatling of Fergus Falls. He is also survived by his parents, Noble and Betty Hatling of Fergus Falls, two brothers, Michael Hatling of Watertown, MN and Bill (Kim) Hatling of St. Cloud, a sister-in-law, Mary Benner and her husband, Joel Waldfogel of Minneapolis, his mother-in-law, Lois Benner of Fergus Falls and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph.

Visitation: Friday from 4 to 8 P.M. with a prayer service and a time of sharing at 7 P.M. at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls and resuming for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial Service: Saturday at 10:00 A.M. at the Federated Church in Fergus Falls
