James Peterson, 93, of Ashby died Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at the Pioneer Care Center in Fergus Falls.
He was born July 14, 1920, son of Alfred and Lillian (Peters) Peterson, at home in Ashby. He was baptized and confirmed at Pelican Lake Lutheran Church, now Peace Lutheran Church in Ashby. He attended Ashby school and began farming with his father. In October of 1946, he married LaVerne Schoening at Immanual Church in Fergus Falls and they made their home on the family farm. His entire life was spent on the farm, doing dairy, beef and grain farming over the years. He served on the Farmers Elevator Board for many years.
In his early years, he played baseball with the Ashby town team, going to the state tournament three times. Jim was a charter member of the Coots Unlimited, Ashby's local sportsman's club. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and especially ice fishing in later years. He enjoyed family gatherings and early morning meetings with farmer friends at the local coffee shop, while he was able. Always a farmer, he enjoyed touring the rural area, checking on the progress of fields and crops. He was a lifelong member of Peace Lutheran Church and belonged to the Ashby Senior Citizens Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Lillian Peterson and his brother, Marcus. He is survived by his wife LaVerne and two sons, Ronald (and friend, Maureen) and Jack Peterson both of Ashby; five grandchildren: Matthew, Tanner, Travis, Dustin and Melanie; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred (Mim) Peterson and two nieces, Judy Feig and Barbara Jacobson both of Minneapolis and other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services: 2 PM, Monday, August 12, 2013 at Peace Lutheran Church, Ashby
Visitation: 3-5 pm Sunday, at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Ashby with a prayer service at 4:30 - and one hour prior to the service at the church
