Ione Walberg

July 26, 1920 — April 26, 2011

Ione LaVay Walberg was born on July 26, 1920 to parents Othar and Hannie (Johnson) Hagen near Vining, MN. She was baptized September 15, 1920 by Reverend C.M. Johnson at Nideros Church, rural Vining. She was confirmed on May 27, 1934 by Reverend Roy N. Wiberg of the Mission Covenant Church, rural Vining. She attended rural school in the Vining area and at the age of 16 moved with her parents to the Evansville area.

On May 16, 1939, Ione was united in marriage to Harold M. Walberg at Garfield, MN. After their marriage they farmed in the Kensington, Brandon and Evansville area. Harold passed away on August 13, 1961. Ione continued to farm until 1966. She then moved into Evansville and she went to work for the Bethany Homes in Alexandria as a cook where she worked until she retired in 1991.

Ione was a member of the Calvary Covenant Church for 72 years, and Covenant Women. Her hobbies included ceramics, needle point, and fabric painting. She was an avid quilter, making quilts for all her children, and as special graduation gifts for all her grandchildren. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends, and loved cooking and baking for them. Her grandchildren have fond memories of the aromas of Grandma's house, and knew there would always be cookies to sample.

On Tuesday, April 26, 2011 Ione Walberg died at Bethany Home in Alexandria at the age of 90 years.

She is survived by her children Pearl (Forrest) Dingman of Motley, MN, Laverne Walberg of Clitherall, MN, Harlan Walberg of Henning, MN, Lucille Zelazny of Plymouth, MN, Wesley (Judy) Walberg of Eagan, MN, Diann (Kurt) Brown of Park Falls, WI, Merle (Sharon) Walberg of Evansville, MN, Janet (Greg) Rosin of Elbow Lake, MN, and Doyle Walberg of Brandon, MN; 28 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 5 great great-grandchildren; sisters Violet Haabala of Brandon, MN, and DeEtte (Bruce) Thompson of Eugene, OR; and her brother Phillip (Marlys) Hagen of Utica, MO.
