He was honorably discharged on August 27, 1946 with the final rank of corporal. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, the Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. George returned to farming on his home place and eventually bought another farm between Elbow Lake and Ashby and farmed until his retirement. In 1968, he was united in marriage to Sigrun Olson. She passed away in June of 1972. He has a life partner, Cora Elliott, whose family he adopted as his own including her grandchildren.

George was a member of United Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake , the American Legion and VFW. His hobbies were playing whist, fishing, hunting and dancing.
