Chaplain, Major General Gaylord T. Gunhus (aka "G.T. to his friends and "Chappy" to his grandchildren) passed away May 27, 2016 at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, at the age of 76. Although born in Enderlin, North Dakota, his youth was spent in Seattle, where he attended school at King's Garden (now Christa) and graduated from Seattle Pacific University in 1962. He entered the Army Chaplains in 1967, after graduating from the Lutheran Brethren Seminary in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. In 1976 he earned a Masters of Theology degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey.

His ministry into the Army called him to serve all over the world. During the 36 years of service as a Chaplain, he served two tours in combat during Viet Nam. In 1999 he was appointed as Chief of Chaplains of the Army. He served in that position until he retired from active duty in August of 2003. He was the Chief of Chaplain during the attacks on the Pentagon and our beloved country on September 11, 2001.

Among the awards and decorations Chaplain Gunhus has received are the Distinguished Service Medal, The Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Parachutist Badge.

Chaplain Gunhus is the recipient of the 2000 CANDL Foundation Award. He was named as the Seattle Pacific University 2001 Alumnus of the Year.

In retirement he served as a consultant to Guideposts Outreach Ministry, supporting the effort to provide Guideposts literature to Military Chaplains throughout the world. He and his wife, Ann, established a retreat ministry for Pastors of small churches taking them on a five day trip in the San Juan Islands aboard their boat to refresh and encourage them.

He is married to the former Ann Broten of Kirkland, Washington. They have been blessed to have been married for more than 52 years. They have three children, Kevin and Michael (Lisa), both living in the Seattle area and are graduates of Seattle Pacific University. Their daughter, Holly (Gunhus) Johnson lives in Scottsdale, Arizona and has two children Lauren and Maxwell. Kevin has three sons, Tyler, Cody and Payton. Michael and Lisa have two children, Claudia and Jamison. All are a true blessing from God!

Memorial Service: Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at Bethel Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls with Rev. David Foss officiating.
