Frank Maiolini

July 21, 1915 — November 6, 2014

Frank Maiolini, 99, of Fergus Falls, died Thursday, November 6, 2014, at PioneerCare in Fergus Falls.

Frank Tullio Maiolini was born July 21, 1915 to Adolpho and Angelina (Tudoni) Maiolini in Berkley California. He attended school there. When Frank was a young boy, his father moved the family to Italy, the country he had emigrated from. They lived there for three years until his father realized the political implications of the Mussolini government and they returned to the United States.

Frank enlisted in the Navy in September of 1941 and was trained as an aircraft mechanic at the Naval Air Station in Alameda, California. After graduation he was assigned to Pearl Harbor for several months and was selected to be of member of a new submarine aircraft patrol squadron. He flew many of these 10 hour patrols. He was stationed in Guadalcanal for almost three years. Frank became ill with malaria and spent 40 days in a tent hospital. In 1944 he was sent back to the USA as a Chief Petty Officer with his unit assigned to the Naval Air Station at Alameda where there were many W.A.V.E.S. working in the office. This is where he met, dated and later married "the best looking one" Kathryn Aune from Underwood, MN. Frank was discharged on October 16, 1945 and on October 20, 1945 he and Kathryn were married at the Lutheran Church in Burlingame, CA. They bought a home in San Leandro, CA where they lived until 1974 when Frank retired from his position as a civilian employee of the Navy in charge of quality control. They moved to Minnesota and built their home on Pickerel Lake. He was very handy with tools and did much of the finishing work of their home. He also enjoyed gardening. Frank was a good golfer and enjoyed the sport for many years. He became a resident of Pioneer Care in 2012. Frank and Kathryn were charter members of Messiah Lutheran Church, Underwood, MN.

Frank was preceded in death by his wife Kathryn, son Robert John, brothers Lory, Milos and Adolpho, Jr.. He is survived by his granddaughter Kelly (Travis) Leavitt; great-grandchildren Logen and Pyper Marie; daughter-in-law Merilee Maiolini; step-grandson Ben Aune and children Joseph, Keara and Aliana; also many nieces and nephews.
