Frances Barbara was born July 19th, 1934 north of Fergus Falls to George and Susan Duncan. She was the sixth of seven children born to the Duncans who farmed in Oscar Township. Frances attended country school District 92 in Fergus Falls Township and graduated from Fergus Falls Senior High in 1952 before beginning work at the Fergus Falls Savings and Loan Association. That summer at the 4-H softball games, Frances caught the eye of a certain young farmer. Four years later they were married.

Frances and Gerald Louis Burau were married on July 14th, 1956 at the Federated Church of Fergus Falls. They settled on the home farm, where they operated a dairy farm and raised their family. She enjoyed watching her children grow and even more the phenomena of grandparenthood. As those children and grandchildren can attest, Frannie also retained a love-hate relationship with Fox News, which was usually turned on in the house if she was home. She is also remembered for her expert skills as a bread maker, her love of cross-stitching, and the wonderful bars and cookies she always had on hand, which earned her the name of "Cookie Grandma" with her great-grandchildren.

She was active in the Dane Prairie Homemaker's Club, the county Farm Bureau, served as the Dane Prairie Township Clerk. Frannie was the Financial Secretary at First Lutheran Church for many years. She also worked for a time at the Motel 7 and K-mart. Frannie was active as a 4-H club leader while her children were growing up and was active in church and on the council. She and Jerry became charter members of Spirit of Hope Lutheran Church in Aurdal Township in 2010.

Frances is survived by her husband, Gerald; her six children, Nancy (Jeff) Freitag, Greg (Lori) Burau, Mark (Julie) Burau, Sandy (Dale) Holo, Lisa (Loren) Sawatsky, and Scott Burau; eleven grandchildren, Mark II (Brandy) Burau, Amy Burau, Stacy (Jesse) Griggs, Shawn Freitag, Chelsea (Robb) Emerson, Dane (Cassie) Holo, Emma (Derek) Schreiber, Isaiah, Ruanna, Josiah and Elijah Sawatsky; five great-grandchildren, Maleia, Tessa, Keira, Lucy, and Thea, with four more due in May; and one sister, Lucille Larson and sister-in-law Dolores Duncan.
