Florence Martha Margaret Lyngstad was born on November 16, 1927 in rural Erhard, the daughter of Carl and Martha Margaret (Olson) Lyngstad. She grew up in the Erhard area and attended school in Pelican Rapids.
On June 22, 1946, Florence married Henry (Heinie) Merz. They were the parents of two children, Perry and Val. Florence was a devoted wife, mother and friend. For many years she worked alongside her husband at Merz Cabinet Shop doing the bookwork and helping with installation and finishing. She also enjoyed her employment at the Children's Shop in Fergus Falls before going to work at the Otter Tail County Recorder's Office, retiring in 1990 after 17 years.
Florence loved being a mother and throughout her life was fully engaged in her children's lives.
Florence was very accomplished at knitting, crocheting, quilting and sewing. She loved flowers and was also an excellent vegetable gardener. She made the best pickles ever. Florence decorated her home beautifully for every holiday and showered her children with greeting cards for every occasion imaginable. She was a great dancer and loved to kick up her heels and have a good time. She dearly loved all of her dogs and grand dogs over the years.
As the family historian, Florence's most treasured gift to future generations on both sides of the family is her collection of photographs and individual family histories she so carefully compiled over the years.
Florence was a member of First Lutheran Church, the VFW Auxiliary and the Eagles Auxiliary. In her younger years she enjoyed participating in various homemakers' groups and church circles.
Florence died peacefully on October 14, 2014 at the PioneerCare Suites in Fergus Falls under the excellent and loving care of the Pioneer staff and Lakeland Hospice. The family wishes to express their gratitude to all those who cared for Florence.
Florence is preceded in death by her husband, Henry, in 2001; her parents; her brothers, Clifford, Marvin and Clarence; her sisters, Myrtle Murphy and Esther Muller; as well as her special friend, Warren Svendsgaard.
