Fay Hess

Fay Hess, 72 of rural Underwood died Friday, May 22, 2015 at the Broen Home in Fergus Falls.

Fay Kathryn Hess was born on September 7, 1942 in Carroll, Iowa the daughter of Lawrence and Evelyn (Heider) Schroeder. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church. Fay attended school in Iowa graduating from the Kuemper Catholic High School in 1960. Fay and George Hess were married on April 22, 1961 in Carroll, Iowa. After their marriage they lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Sioux City, Iowa. In 1967, they moved to Underwood, Minnesota where they lived a short time before building their present home on Pickerel Lake. Fay was a dental assistant, a homemaker and in 1983, built Under-Mart which she owned and operated until 1995. She enjoyed sewing (especially making doll clothing for the Salvation Army), quilting, cooking, flower gardening, fishing, hunting, and would walk every day. Fay liked living on Pickerel Lake, and enjoyed swimming and water skiing and being with her family. Fay was proud of her grandchildren. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Maine, a Charter member of St. James Circle III, and on the Council of Catholic Women.

She is survived by her husband, George; three children, Marie (John) Keefe of Lindstrom, Steve (Kim) Hess of Port Orchard, WA. and Paul (Dawn) Hess of Underwood; nine grandchildren, John Keefe, Megan Walsh, Thomas, Dan and Elizabeth Keefe, Steven Yesel, Ashlyn, Sarah and Katie Hess; one brother, Bill (Jan) Schroeder of West Des Moines, IA.; one sister, Bonny (Ray) Fortune of West Des Moines, IA.; and by numerous relatives and friends. Fay was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Evelyn Schroeder; son, David Hess in 2010; two brothers, Leo and Larry Schroeder; and by two sisters, Betty Heitoff and Phyllis DeYoung.
