Catherine Grace (Carvell) Hilden, 72, of Kent, Washington, formerly Underwood, passed away in Seattle, WA, following a 5 month battle with cancer on September 17th, 2016, with her family by her side.
Born to Paul and Catherine (Shroeder) Carvell on October 1, 1943 in Detroit Lakes MN, Cathy spent her elementary school days in Montana, summers in Detroit Lakes, and moved to Drayton, ND following 6th grade. She graduated from Drayton High School in 1961 and attended the University of North Dakota earning a teaching degree in Physical Education in 1965. Her first teaching job was in International Falls. In 1969 she began teaching in Underwood MN. Cathy was passionate about athletics and used this passion to start women's athletic programs as well as coach countless volleyball players, basketball players and cheerleaders in International Falls, MN and then Underwood, MN.
Cathy met fellow Underwood teacher David Hilden in 1969. The couple married on June 19th, 1971 and went on to have five children. After David's death in 1999, Cathy continued to travel across the United Stated in her RV to visit friends and family. After several years, she decided she had enough of the cold Minnesota winters and in 2005, she permanently moved to Kent, WA. Here she continued to be active in the Say What Club, Online Beta and Second Life. In these communities she held multiple roles and was remembered for her kindness and giving nature, particularly to those with disabilities. Cathy was very active encouraging those with disabilities to participate in life.
Cathy is remembered by her children for her spirited card games, her love of black olives, all things sports, travel, camping, crafts and painting. Her grandchildren remember her patience in reading story after story and always having ice cream in the freezer.
Cathy is survived in death by her children, Michael (Raven) Hilden of Temecula, CA, Jennifer (Tyler) Saltonstall of Renton, WA, Christina (Michael) Edman of Fairmont, MN and Jonathan (Samantha) Hilden of Tampa, FL and eight grandchildren, Kevin, Alexia, Nolan, Nora, Henry, Ingrid, Gwen and Solveigh, who she loved dearly. She is also survived by her brothers, Peter Carvell of Jamestown ND and Paul Carvell of South Carolina, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a wonderful network of friends. Cathy is preceded in death by her husband of 29 years, David and their daughter Deborah.
Memorial Open House: 1-3 PM Saturday, October 15th, 2016 at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls, MN.
Interment will be in Silent Vale Cemetery, Maine, MN.
Memorials are preferred to the Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo.
