Alvin Hoefs

Alvin Hoefs, 95, of Fergus Falls, died Saturday, July 28, 2012, at PioneerCare Suites under the care of Lakeland Hospice.

Alvin John Friderick Hoefs was born on July 12, 1917 in Lidgerwood, ND, the son of George and Mary (Schuett) Hoefs. As a child, Alvin moved with his family to Fairmount, ND, where he was baptized into the Lutheran church and was later confirmed in 1931. As a young adult, Alvin traveled extensively throughout the western United States.

On September 19, 1938, Alvin married Harriet Weiss in St. John's Lutheran Church, Elizabeth, MN. Alvin and Harriet farmed in Fairmount, ND for two years and then moved east of Erhard, MN, where they had a dairy farm for 24 years.

Alvin was active in St. John's Lutheran Church in Elizabeth and served on the church board for many years. He also served on the Erhard creamery and school boards for a number of years.

In 1966, the family moved to Crookston, MN, where Alvin worked as an Assistant Animal Technician in the Dairy Husbandry Program for the Northwest Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota. He joined Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

He retired in 1981, and he and Harriet moved to Fergus Falls, where they attended Trinity Lutheran Church for a few years before transferring to Faith Lutheran Church. For many years he volunteered landscape maintenance to Faith Church's grounds.
Alvin and Harriet wintered in Texas from 1983 – 1995. Alvin volunteered as a driver for Social Services, Red Cross, and Meals on Wheels, and also volunteered at the Food Shelf.

Alvin is survived by a son, Gary Hoefs of Grand Forks, ND; a daughter, Candace Noel of Durham, NC; three great-grandchildren, Aaron Nichols, Amanda Karch and Jacob Karch; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet on November 19, 2008; brothers, Harold (Adeline) Hoefs and Wesley (Dorothy) Hoefs; sisters, Ada (Henry) Gast, Viola (Edward) Mauer, Beatrice (Raymond) Weiss, and Regina (Howard) Patrick; a granddaughter, Tammy (Hoefs) Nichols; and daughter-in-law, Mary (Skavlem) Hoefs.

Visitation: 5 – 7 PM Monday, July 30, 2012, at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Funeral Service: 1 PM Tuesday, July 31, 2012, at Faith Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls

Interment: Trinity-Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Fergus Falls
