Virgil Olson

Virgil Olson, 80, of Battle Lake died Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at Lake Region Hospital.

He was born February 14, 1922 in Erdahl Township to Paul and Dora (Nelson) Olson. He graduated from the Evansville High School and served in the U. S. Army from November 1945 to February 1947.

On November 26, 1948 he married Lorraine Nepper. They lived and farmed around Ashby, Idaho, Parkers Prairie and for the last 37 years at Battle Lake. He worked for Mark Sand and Gravel, hauled livestock and moved buildings and grain bins until he retired in 2001.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; sisters, Elaine (Robert) Anderson of Ashby and Verla Forbes of Charleston, SC; brother, Merl (Dorothy) Olson of Ashby; sister-in-law, Margo Nepper of Fergus Falls; brother-in-law, John (Joyce) Nepper of Superior, WI; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the funeral home with the family present.

Memorial Service: 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls

Eleanor Bothun

Eleanor Bothun, 86, of Dalton died Thursday, October 3, 2002 at her daughter’s home in Brooklyn Park.

She was born August 4, 1916 in St. Olaf Township, Otter Tail County, MN to Martin and Mary (Juvland) Benhardus. She was baptized by Pastor Johan F. Melom at Bethel Lutheran Church, rural Dalton, on September 3, 1916. Her sponsers were Wm. O. Wold, Gena Wold, Bernhard Tolleffson and Gena Olson.

On June 24, 1937 she was united in marriage to Chester E. Bothun at the Bothun farm two miles southeast of Dalton. They were parents of six daughters. She had a deep faith in God and nothing was more important to her. She was a hard worker who was proficient at baking, cooking, gardening, sewing, canning, freezing, quilting, crocheting and rug weaving. She worked in the fields and at times helped milk cows. She always had a meal or lunch ready for visitors and no one could leave her house without eating. Her husband passed away on January 22, 1981.

Left to cherish her memory are six daughters, Corrine (Roger) Tobolt of Brooklyn Park, Eunice (Roger) Digre of Dalton, Mavis (Ken) Bolin of Bell Buckle, TN, Bette (Bill) Cote of Morehead City, NC, Donna (Danny) Boren of Goldsboro, NC and Janet Nelson of Alexandria, whose husband, Tom, passed away December 16, 2001; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Diane and Duane Tobolt; Chuck (Sandy) Tobolt and Kayla; Jill (Cody) Field; Carl and Andrew Digre; Celeste Cote; Angela (Rob) Moore and Meagan; Joshua (DeAna) Boren; Jacob Boren; Karmen and Kacie Nelson; Kaia Nelson and Ethan; she also considered Tom’s daughters and their families as her grandchildren, Tammy (Matt) Dickey and Dillan, Spencer and Anna, and Julie (Andy) Wigfield, Cody and Chandra. Other survivors include three sisters, Olga O’Donnell, Mildred Holmen and Agnes Benhardus; three brothers, Robert (Laura) Hoff, Joe (Norma) Hoff and Franklin Hoff; brothers and sisters-in-law, Milo Haagenson, Lennie (Mildred) Bothun and Irene Bothun.

Visitation: Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home in Ashby and one hour prior to the service at the church

Service: 11 a.m. Monday at Zion-Sarpsborg Church in Dalton

Evenelle (Mrs. Arnold) Evavold

Evenelle (Mrs. Arnold) Evavold, 90, of Battle Lake died Sunday, October 6, 2002 at the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center.

She was born July 9, 1912 to Rev. Louis and Emma (Hansen) Hanson in Rochester, MN and delivered by Dr. Charles Mayo. Rev. Hanson was pastor at Bethel Church. Her father became ill so they moved to Alexandria. He died June 30, 1918. Her mother married Klaus Evavold. She and her brother, Lynn Hanson Luthard, moved to Ashby with their mother. There they met Mr. Evavold’s children, Ephraim. Lillie, Minnie and Elvina. She changed her name from Lillian to Evenelle.

She attended school at District 67 in Eagle Lake Township and attended her freshmen year at Ashby. She then went to Alexandria where she graduated from high school and one year of teachers training. On July 5, 1936 she married Arnold Evavold. They lived on a farm in Eagle Lake Township. She taught country school for five years at District 104 in Douglas County and then at Districts 81, 114, 93, 67, 72 and 283 in Otter Tail County. In 1968 she graduated from Moorhead State College with a teaching degree and then taught Special Education in McKinley, Lincoln and Adams schools in Fergus Falls. She retired in 1977 at age 65. The couple moved to Summit Village in Battle Lake in 1996.

She loved quilting, crafts, looking up family history and her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepdad, sister, Palma at two years of age; new born brother; step-sister, Minnie and brother-in-law, Karold Evavold. She is survived by her husband, Arnold; children, Stanley (Mardelle) Evavold of Superior, WI, Roscoe (Cynthia) Evavold of Bloomington, Maxine (Gary) Olson of Richfield, Allan (June) Evavold of Naperville, Ill, Joyce (David) Deem of Metropolis, Ill and Janelle (David) Hickerson of Champlin; 21 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Rev. Lynn (Thelma) Luthard of Paynesville and a sister-in-law, Violet Evavold of Ashby.

Visitation: Tuesday from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church

Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake

Dorothy Ann Wilcox

Dorothy Ann Wilcox was born May 27, 1926 in Minneapolis, MN to Archibald and Vivian (Logeais) Bartlett. On June 17, 1944 she and Walter "Bud" Wilcox were married in Texas with a military wedding. They lived in Minneapolis where she was a dedicated homemaker. In November of 1995 Dorothy and Bud moved to Ashby and purchased a home on Pelican Lake.

Dorothy enjoyed gardening and roses, crafts and was an excellent seamstress. She was involved in Boy Scouts, enjoyed her sewing group and was a devoted mother.

On Tuesday, October 15, 2002 Dorothy passed away at her son’s home in St. Michael, MN at the age of 76 following a courageous three year battle with cancer.

She is survived by her husband, Walter; two daughters, Diane (Robert) Reinke of Vermillion, SD and their children, Jennifer (Jason) Mote of Chicago, Ill, Jessica Reinke of Atlanta, Georgia and Jacqueline Reinke of Vermillion, SD and Cheryl (William) Larson of Maple Grove, MN and their son, Michael J. Foye of Maple Grove; sons, Richard E. of St. Michael, MN and Ronald (Lisa) of Elk River, MN and their children, Sarah and Jennifer Tresise and Daniel Wilcox all of Elk River. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Robert Klovstad

Robert Klovstad, 71, of Fergus Falls died Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at Lake Region Hospital.

He was born July 28, 1931 in Maplewood Township to Carroll and Ruth (Bakken) Klovstad. He was baptized and confirmed at Maplewood Lutheran Church. He attended country school through the eighth grade and then helped his dad on the family farm. He followed his brothers, Kenneth and Kermit, to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he received a Purple Heart.

He met and later married Sandra Samuelson on August 9, 1960 at the Church of the Nazarene in Fergus Falls. They had a daughter, Susan, on February 27, 1962. He worked at A-A Tire Company, National Tea Packing Company and Conagra Flour Mills. He enjoyed going for drives and hunting and fishing with his son-in-law and grandsons.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra; daughter, Susan (David) Grasshoff of Morris; three grandchildren, Bryan, Kayla and Jason Grasshoff all of Morris; brothers, Kermit (Carolyn) Klovstad of Erhard, Kenneth (Marlys) Klovstad of Fergus Falls, Percy (Claudia) Klovstad of Underwood and Wayne (Connie) Klovstad of Erhard. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation: Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service

Verna Holmes

Verna Holmes, 89, of Minneapolis, formerly of Buchanan Lake near Ottertail, died Thursday, October 17, 2002 at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Minneapolis.

She was born April 21, 1913 in Heimdal, ND to Albert and Mathilda (Smith) Haavig. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended school in the Heimdal area.

She was a homemaker in the home and was active with church work in New Rockford, ND where she also taught Sunday School. After she retired she spent winters in Texas and summers at her lake cottage on Buchanan Lake. The last few years she has lived in Minneapolis.

She enjoyed cooking and reading and was always very informed on world affairs.

She is survived by her son, Elvin (Donna) Halverson of Owatonna; grandson, David Halverson of St. Paul and two sisters, Mrs. Bill (Meryl) Beauclair of Minot, ND and Mrs. Dennis (Hazel) Maas of Riverside, CA.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service

Ruby Strande

Ruby L. Strande, 82, of Fergus Falls died Thursday, October 17, 2002 at Lake Region Hospital.

She was born September 13, 1920 in Akron Township, rural Rothsay, to Otto and Caroline (Bachman) Max. She attended school District #28 in Akron Township. She lived at home and helped on the family farm.

On December 31, 1952 she was married to Adolph Strande at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wahpeton, ND by Rev. Frey. They lived and farmed in Buse Township until 1955, then moved to Western Township where they lived and farmed for 37 years. In the early 1990's they moved back to their farm in Carlisle Township. Mr. Strande died July 11, 2000.

She was a very family oriented person who enjoyed the family farm helping her husband and sons. She received much pleasure from and was very proud of her grandchildren.

She is survived by three sons, Adrian Strande, Arvid (Nancy) Strande and Alan Strande all of Fergus Falls and three grandchildren, Jonathan Strande of Burnesville, Jeffrey (Missy) Strande of Apple Valley and Annette Strande of Fergus Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Adolph; infant son; five brothers, Otto, Richard, John, Kermit and an infant brother; five sisters, Helen, Cora, Glee, Inez and infant sister.

Visitation: Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.at the Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service

Lori Kaye Dorn

Lori Kaye Dorn, age 43, of Fergus Falls died Friday, October 18, 2002 at her residence in Fergus Falls.

She was born October 16, 1959 at Lake Region Hospital and baptized into the Lutheran Faith. She attended schools in Fergus Falls. She completed her LPN Nurses Training at FFCC and worked in nursing homes and clinics in Moorhead, MN as long as her health permitted.

On April 8, 1978, she married Darrell Dorn in Fergus Falls.

She had a great love for animals and worked at the Humane Society in earlier years. She was proud of her nursing profession and very knowledgeable of her work.

Survivors include her son Jeremy and his special friend Karla Fronning; parents Dale and Janice Rieken; a brother Loren (Kristi) Rieken; nephews Micah and Tyson all of Fergus Falls; grandmother Hazel Bowman who resides at the Pioneer Nursing Home; aunts and uncles James and Mary Bowman of Elgin, Illinois, Dennis and Paulette Bowman of Fergus Falls, Bernard and Elaine Fossan of Dalton, Ardis Rieken and La Villa Nelson of Fergus Falls; numerous cousins; and also her loving companion of many years her dog Daisy Mae. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ernest Bowman, William and Bertha Rieken; and an infant brother Lowell.

Private Services will be held.

Martha V. Rossum

Martha V. Rossum, age 83, of Evansville passed away October 28, 2002 at Crestview Manor Nursing Home in Evansville.

She was born August 10, 1919 in Carson, ND to John and Sarah (Pahl) Huber. She grew up and graduated from Thane High School in Carson, ND. She later moved to Evansville where she married Earl Rossum on April 7, 1940 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church.

They made their home in Evansville and she started out cooking at the school. She later worked as a waitress in Evansville, the drug store, and later for the clinic in Elbow Lake, MN. She then went to work for Herbergers in Alexandria for many years. After her retirement, she worked as an aid at the Evansville school where she loved working with the children and the children loved her very much.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church where she was active in different groups and circles. She was a former member of the Evansville Garden Club.

She talked about how as a young girl her family would always get together and sing. Music was always a very special part of her life.

She enjoyed her garden and flowers.

She is survived by her daughter, Patsy (David) Ostugaard of Irvine, PA; three grandchildren, Craig (Natalie) of Pioneer, CA and their two children Carly and Madissen, Dr. Carry (Lillian) of Pensicola, FL and their two children Luke and Adam, and Catherine (Fiancee Gary Zimmer) of Bozeman, MT; two sisters, Lilly (Tony) Ackerman of Uleitzig, ND and Delores Hart of Yakima, WA; and one brother, Fred (Freda) Rossum of Lake Forest, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband in September of 1991; her parents; and thirteen siblings.

Service: Friday at 2 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, Evansville

Doris Ressler

Doris Ressler, 73, of Fergus Falls died Thursday, October 31, 2002 at Lake Region Hospital.

She was born October 4, 1929 in Rutland, IA to Clifford and Lois (Jurgens) Saxby. She was raised in Rutland and graduated from Rutland High School in 1947.

She married Gordon Gregory who passed away in 1971. In 1973 she married Bill Ressler. She worked many years in retail in Algona, IA. She and Bill moved to Minnesota in 1977 where she continued working in retail. She later was employed with Telnet where she worked until retiring in 1991.

She was a member of Federated Church. Doris enjoyed cooking, gardening, fishing, bowling, golfing, playing cards and her pets. She enjoyed her family and friends and life.

She is survived by her husband, Bill; children, Roger (Pat) Gregory of Crystal Lake, IL, Randy (Shirley) Gregory of Mezappa, MN, Geraldine (Kenneth) Stripling of Manning, IA, Suzanne (Gerald) Bormann of Pinewood, MN, Nancy (Steve) Waller of Breezy Point, MN, Robert (Linda) Ressler of Globe, AZ and David (Patty) Ressler of Manitowoc, WI; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Mary (Duane) Kerston of Lamar, MO; special mother-in-law, Rose Ressler of Humboldt, IA; nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and "Max". She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.
