Clara Hokanson

Clara Hokanson, 81, of Evansville died Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at the Pelican Lake Health Care Center in Ashby.

She was born March 18, 1921 in St. Olaf Twp, rural Ashby, to Christian and Asta (Pederson) Hanson. She was baptized and confirmed in Grue Lutheran Church and attended rural School District #6 in Eagle Lake Township.

On February 3, 1940 she married Reuben Hokanson in Henning. They lived in Clitherall, then moved to Yakima Valley in Washington. In 1944 they returned to Douglas County in Minnesota and lived on a farm in rural Evansville. She was a certified nursing assistant and worked from 1966 to 1993 at the Pelican Lake Health Care Center in Ashby. She also helped her husband on the farm. In 1995 she entered the Pelican Lake Health Care Center.

She enjoyed gardening and loved to cook and bake. She made her own bread, cookies, cakes and pies. Everyone who came to her house was always welcome and enjoyed a cup of coffee.

She is survived by two daughters, Pearl Amelsberg of Melby and Ruby (Allan) Lerfald of Champlin; a son, Duane (Sherri) Hokanson of Evansville; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Michael (Alaina) Lerfald and Katelyn, Dustin and Matthew of Brooklyn Park, Don Amelsberg and Chance of Hinckley, Jennifer (Jeff) Kosek of Andover, Linette (Charlie) Hanson and Eric of Melby, Kay Hokanson of Osakis and Marie Hokanson of Evansville; three sisters, Geneva Karasch of Henning, Laurize Larson of Dalton and Alvina Suchy of Battle Lake and two brothers, David Hanson of Evansville and Raymond Hanson of Battle Lake. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben, on March 13, 1995; son-in-law, Donald Amelsberg; sisters, Violet Flink and Mabel Kramer and brothers, Alfred Hanson, Harry Hanson and Hartwick Hanson.

Loren S. Erickson

Loren S. Erickson, 89, of Leaf Mountain Township, rural Clitherall, died Friday, February 7, 2003 at his home.

He was born March 7, 1913 in Colfax Township, rural Belgrade, to Reinart and Mollie (Larson) Erickson. He attended rural school in Colfax Township. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith.

On September 12, 1941, he married Flora K. Hanson in St. Joseph, Missouri. After marriage they farmed by Kensington, Lowry, Starbuck and Millerville and in 1970 they purchased a farm in Leaf Mountain Township south of Clitherall.

He enjoyed farming, especially driving tractor, and up until last summer he would drive tractor and help John haul round bales. He was also very mechanical and after his retirement from farming he worked a couple years for John Korkowski International in Brandon. He also enjoyed his family and especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by one son, John L (Mary) Erickson of Clitherall; three grandchildren, Jodi (Jon) Trosdahl and John (Ronda) Erickson all of Battle Lake, and Raymond Erickson of Hoffman; and four great-grandchildren, Nathan, Audrey, Jacob and Nicholas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Flora on June 6, 1999; a granddaughter, Lora Erickson on February 11, 1997; two brothers, Roy and Neuman Erickson; and two sisters, Gladys Derek and Ellen Pierce.

Mildred B. Sandberg

Mildred B. Sandberg, 89, of Evansville, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2003, at Crestview Manor Nursing Home in Evansville.

She was born May 5, 1913 in Barrett, the daughter of Oscar E. and Tilda (Skare) Olson. She graduated from Elbow Lake High School in May, 1930.

On June 23, 1935, she married James H. Sandberg in Barrett and they made their home in Evansville. They owned and operated the Evansville Auto and Implement Co. In 1954 they purchased a farm near Evansville. Their life was centered around their three sons, Harlan, Bruce and Lee, family, church and community. They had been married for 66 years when James passed away on September 4, 2001.

She was an active member of the original Immanuel Lutheran Church, which is now Faith Lutheran, where she taught Sunday School and was an active member of the ELCW. She also worked in Evansville Elementary School where she had the opportunity to tutor individual children as well as assist in the classrooms. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, canning, baking, and bird-watching. Mildred’s warm, caring heart blessed her family and friends.

She is survived by two sons, Harlan (Judy) Sandberg of New Hope and Bruce Sandberg of Farmington; daughter-in-law, Linda Sandberg Plummer of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Stacey Wickman, Betsy Borseth, Molly Sandberg, Brian Sandberg, Erik Sandberg and Jaclyn Sandberg Plummer; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James; her son, Lee Stuart; and two sisters, Opal Schneeberger and Gladys Baldwin.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the church

Dorothy Zarn

Dorothy Zarn, 84, of Evansville died Monday, February 17, 2003 at Crestview Manor Nursing Home in Evansville.

She was born June 1, 1918 in Whitewater, WI to Claude and Hazel (Draper) Jones. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church at Lewisville, MN. As a young girl she lived in various places in Minnesota.

On August 8, 1936 she married Robert Zarn at Esterville, IA. They farmed in the Amboy and Madelia, MN areas until 1951 when they moved to a farm they purchased by Evansville. They farmed there until May of 1960 when they moved to Evansville. She worked at various places part time until arthritis disabled her. She moved to Crestview Manor Nursing Home in September of 2000.

She was a housewife, mother and worked along side her husband on the farm. She raised large gardens and canned all vegetables and fruit for her family. She always had homemade bread and no matter what was served in her kitchen, everyone was welcomed to share. The coffee pot was always on.

She was never a complainer and always had a smile and witty personality. She was a very funny lady with a very fun loving heart. To grandma everyone was a honey or a sweetie, and although she would never admit it, she was the biggest hearted sweetie of them all.

She is survived by her children, Daryl Zarn and special friend, Marnell of Guerneyville, CA, Janice (Lyle) Olson of Evansville, Dennis (Carolyn) Zarn of Culpeper, VA, JoAnn Zarn (Richard Aasness) of Minneapolis, MN and Michael (Sally) Zarn of Salem, OR; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren, sister, Nancy (Pete) Gries of Aurora, SD; four nieces and two nephews; many friends and a very special friend, Donna Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert, daughter, Carol and a sister, Una.

Visitation: Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church

Irene Thompson

Irene Thompson, 91, of Ashby died Monday, February 17, 2003 at the Pelican Lake Health Care Center in Ashby.

She was born September 11, 1911 in St. Olaf Township, rural Battle Lake, to Theodore and Emma (Pederson) Risbrudt. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Olaf Lutheran Church and attended rural School District #2 in St. Olaf Township.

On July 29, 1933 she married Maurice Thompson in Ashby. The couple lived and farmed in Eagle Lake Township, St. Olaf Township and then purchased their farm in Eagle Lake Township. In July of 1993 they retired and bought a home in Ashby. Mr. Thompson died December 28, 1993 and she entered the Pelican Lake Health Care Center in January of 2000.

She loved milking cows, mowing and raking lawn, quilting at Bethel Church with her friends, dinners at the Ashby Senior Center, cooking, baking and her family. When she was younger she and Maurice loved to dance and sing.

She is survived by two sons, Lynn (Renee) Thompson of Brandon and Larry Thompson of Huson, MT; five grandchildren, Luke (Deb) Thompson and Alexis, Coley and Bailey of St. Michael, MN, Duane Thompson of Katy, TX, Vicki (Kyle) Johnson and Paiton, Paige and Makanna of Jordan, MN, Lana (Pat) Suchy and Chandler and London of Alexandria, MN and Krista (Brad) Burns and Braden and Emma of Grand Junction, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Maurice; son, Merlyn; two brothers, Truman and Alton; sisters, Myrtle Fick, Grace Fellet, Theoline Holo, Evelyn Anderson, Loraine Romanek and LaVon Nelson

Lorraine Neuleib

Lorraine Neuleib, 72, of Fergus Falls died Thursday, February 20, 2003 at the Otter Tail Nursing Home.

She was born October 6, 1930 to Charles and Florence (Gearhart) Asplin in Willard, WI, where she was raised and attended school. She lived in Wisconsin, Oregon and later moved to Minnesota where she married her life partner, William "Bill" Neuleib.

She enjoyed gardening, singing, reciting poetry, flower arranging, reading bedtime stories to her children, fishing the lakes and rivers of the State of Oregon and was an avid hunter.

She is survived by a son, Clifford (Veryl) Sackett of Fergus Falls; two daughters, Gloria Lovell and Brenda (Leonard) Adams both of Park City, MT; six grandchildren, Amanda Lovell (Jeff Hamilton), Shane (Amanda) Tibiatowski, Jay Tibiatowski and Jeremy Tibiatowski, Cyndie Adams and Angel Bates; seven great-grandchildren, Toni and Derek, Morgan and Kindra, Kiley Anne, Jackson, and Carter; siblings, Hubert (Birdie) Asplin, Lila Sackett, Velda Asplin, Bud Asplin, Betty Asplin and Jean (Wendel) Sukow; sister-in-law, Joyce Asplin; countless nieces and nephews; and an honorable mention to her precious friend, Caroline Billing. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Glenn Lockman; sisters, Florence Beyer and Lois Wick and a brother, Bill Asplin.

Leona Borgrud

Leona Borgrud, 96, of Evansville died Sunday, February 23, 2003 at Crestview Manor Nursing Home in Evansville.

She was born August 23, 1906 in Evansville to Ole and Ida (Peterson) Melby. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and attended the Evansville Public School.

On March 24, 1925 she married Freeman Borgrud at the Lutheran church parsonage in Evansville. Following their marriage, they lived in Wauban, MN for two years and then returned to Evansville. She cooked at local restaurants and then was a cook for ten years in the Evansville Public School.

She was an active member of the Evansville Senior Citizens Center where she served as president for many years. She was also a member of Faith Lutheran Church and enjoyed crocheting.

She is survived by a daughter, Doris (Vern) Glidden of Bloomington; two daughters-in-law, Maybelle Borgrud of Richville and Dorothy Borgrud of Atwater; nine grandchildren, John (Jill) Kolkind of Bloomington, James (Gayle) Kolkind of Brooklyn Park, David (Cindy) Kolkind of Bloomington, Jeffrey (Lois) Borgrud of Mapleton, ND, Jennifer Borgrud and Jason Borgrud both of Fargo, ND, Mary (Curt) Krenik of Billings, MT, Jean Borgrud and fiancee, Dave Ahl of Grove City and Gail (Steven) Gregoire of Cottonwood; 14 great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Kenneth, Andrew, Ramzi, Gabriel, Cole, Kyle, Michael, Laurel, Megan, Kelly, Samantha, Alonna and Ivy; two half-brothers, Loren (Gracie) Klien of Daytona Beach, FL and Corroll (Cappy) Klien of Coos Bay, OR. She was preceded in death by her husband, Freeman on February 7, 1976; two sons, Marlin and Alvin Borgrud; two sisters, Marcella and Amelia Melby; four brothers, Cecil, Clifford, Wendell and Orville Melby; two half-brothers, Donald and Phillip Klien.

Edna Mabel Anderson

Edna Mabel Anderson died under Hospice care on February 28, 2003 in West Fargo at her daughter's home. Her faith in God sustained her during her journey through life.

Edna Olson was born on a farm near Elbow Lake, MN, on February 15, 1926 to Egelev and Ole Olson. She spoke only Norwegian until she started school in Grant County district 55. In 1945, she graduated from Ashby High School and moved to Fergus Falls. In 1948, she married Alvin Anderson.

For 29 years, she was employed by the Regional Treatment Center, retiring in 1992. Besides being a loving mother, she was a wonderful grandmother who always had time for her grandchildren.

Edna enjoyed traveling and visited relatives in Norway. She spent much of her time with friends and family, gardening, and preparing and sharing lefse and flatbread. She will be remembered for her generosity and caring for others.

She was preceded in death by husband Alvin; sisters Sigrun Moerke and Agnes Stokes; brothers Omer, Gunvold and Alvin Olson.

She is survived by a son, Erv (Kathryn) of Wallkill, NY, and a daughter, Rebecca Anderson Falde (Greg) of West Fargo; grandchildren Christian, Erin, and Kelsey Anderson and Steffen and Eric Falde; sisters Gladys Benson and Mildred Olson of Ashby; sisters-in-law Irene Saurer (Vernon) of Fergus Falls and Ruth Anderson of Norman, Oklahoma; nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends, especially Gene and Irene Lundquist of Battle Lake.

Visitation: Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m. at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls
