Edna Mikkelsen

Edna Mikkelsen. 101, of Fergus Falls died Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at the Broen Memorial Home.

She was born February 27, 1902 in Audubon, IA to Soren and Anna Maria Neilsen and was raised on a farm in Clitherall Township. She later moved to Fergus Falls and cared for her mother during her last years and worked at Park Region Bakery.

On August 27, 1949 she married Thomas Mikkelsen and they resided on a farm near Evansville. After his death on April 3, 1969 she moved back to Fergus Falls and since December 2000 has resided at the Broen Memorial Home.

She is survived by special nieces, Jan Berg and Lorraine Hand of Grand Rapids, Mary Kolle of Fergus Falls, Marian (Phil) Holte of Fargo, ND, Carol Jean (Jerry) Zastrow of Alexandria and Evelyn (Alex) Wagoner of Milwaukee, WI and two nephews, Richard Herness of Dalton and Duane (Arlene) Nelson of Amboy, WA. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas; six sisters, Christina (Henry) Herness, Anna (Rudolph) Samuelson, Kate (James) Welch, Julia (Lewis) Storey, Martha (Walter) Heald and one sister in infancy; two brothers, Hans (Martha) Nelson and Nels (Emilia) Nelson.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service

Service: 10 a.m. Thursday, Light & Life Auditorium, Broen Memorial Home

Gladys Larson

Gladys Larson, 92, of Fergus Falls died Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at her residence under the loving care of hospice and her family.

She was born October 31, 1910 in Cuyaga, ND to Dan and Grace (Freeman) Andrus. As a child she moved to Dalton with her family.

She was united in marriage to Lawrence Larson in 1937. They purchased the family farm in 1941. They worked side by side on the farm and raised their three children and two foster children. Mr. Larson passed away in 1968. In 1972 she was united in marriage to Morris Larson. He died in 2001.

She was devoted to her church and family and served in many capacities at her church.

She is survived by her daughter, Rosemary Erickson of Saratoga, WY; sons, Jon (Jan) Larson of Fargo, ND and Dan (Linda) Larson of Dalton; grandchildren, Cheri (Scott) Stegman, Amy, Chris, Erick and Kim Larson, Todd (Loretta) Erickson and Valerie (Mark) Condict; great-grandchildren, Ciara, Casidi Stegman, Gavin Larson, Kristina Mills, David and Gary Condict; and a sister, May Tripp of Ashby. She was preceded in death by her parents and husbands, Lawrence and Morris.

The family prefers memorials to Hospice.

Visitation: Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls

Service: Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Light & Life Auditorium at the Broen Memorial Home, Fergus Falls

Shad Thernell

Shad Thernell, 46, of Fergus Falls died Tuesday, April 2, 2003 at Lake Region Hospital.

He was born April 20, 1956 in Minneapolis to Harry and Karen (Palm) Thernell. He was baptized and confirmed at First Presbyterian Church in Pompano Beach, FL and graduated from St. Andrews Academy at Boca Raton, FL in 1974. He attended college in Gainesville, FL and worked for a surveying company during the summers. He then began working for Cable TV which developed into his own business for seven years. In 1996 he moved to Minnesota because of health reasons and to be close to his family.

He enjoyed fishing and was an excellent swimmer. As a young man he was involved in swimming competition and other sports. He also enjoyed carpentry and any type of woodwork.

He is survived by his parents, Harry and Karen Thernell of Battle Lake; sisters, Cindy Thernell and Layne Thernell of Fergus Falls; brother, Jay (Katrina) Thernell of Willits, CA; niece, Shannon of Fergus Falls; nephews, Ahren and Rian of Fergus Falls and Joshua of Willits, CA; great-nephew, Saxon of Fergus Falls. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Shad was a very talented individual with a wonderful mind and a quick wit. He will be sorely missed by his family and everyone that knew him.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service

Service: 2 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake

Jeffrey Follingstad

Jeffrey Follingstad, 36, of Fergus Falls died Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at his home.

He was born October 30, 1966 in Pelican Rapids to Orlando and Janet (Haugen) Follingstad. He was baptized and confirmed at Faith Lutheran Church in Pelican Rapids and graduated from the Pelican Rapids High School.

He attended Fergus Falls Community College and Wadena Technical College. He has lived and worked at various jobs in Fergus Falls most of his life. He was recently employed by a major cleaning service working at Home Depot.

He enjoyed fishing, reading and music.

He is survived by his parents, Orlando and Janet Follingstad of Battle Lake; sister, Judy Follingstad of Minneapolis; brothers, Orin Follingstad of Underwood, Michael (Jill) Follingstad of Edina and Steven (Terri) Follingstad of Moorhead; one nephew Jay Follingstad and many cousins.

Visitation: Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service

Leona Henning

Leona Henning, 101, of Fergus Falls, formerly of Fargo, ND, died Thursday, April 3, 2003 at the Pioneer Retirement Community.

She was born September 11, 1901, the daughter of Stephan and Marianna (Horner) Dietrich at their farm home south of Glen Ullin, ND, where she grew up and attended school. She married Fred E. Henning in Minneapolis on December 4, 1927, which was the 50th wedding anniversary of Fred’s parents. They established their home in Fargo where she worked as the bookkeeper for the family business, Henning Electric Motor Company. Upon retirement she became an active volunteer for the Red River Valley Handicapped Group driving many miles transporting people to appointments and spending hours visiting with them. The RRVHG named her Volunteer of the Year several times. In 1991 she was also honored for her work with the handicapped by the Anne Carlsen School in Jamestown where a scholarship fund was established in her name. Her other interests included needlework, especially Hardanger, playing bridge and spending time at the family cottage on Pelican Lake with her children, grandchildren and friends. She loved horses, became an accomplished rider, and would ride whenever there was an opportunity. In 1988 she moved to Fergus Falls. She was a long-time member of Olivet Lutheran Church in Fargo and an associate member of First Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls.

She is survived by her children, Victor (Nancy) Henning of Ft. Collins, CO, Beverly (Robert W.) Peterson of Bismarck, ND and Loralee (Dorwin) Hansen of Fergus Falls; grandchildren, the Rev. Leslie (Rev. Nick) Striegel of Scottsbluff, NE, Melissa Henning of Los Angeles, CA, Eric (Lynette) Henning of Wellington, CO, Christian Henning and Martin (Lynn) Henning of Ft. Collins, CO, Stephanie (Mark) Fedley of Warrnambool, Australia, Robert R. (Kathy) Peterson of Bismarck, ND, Dr. Gary (Cindy) Peterson of Tucson, AZ, Sonya (Ron) Czerepak of North St. Paul, Mark (Andrea) Peterson of Mendota Heights, Timothy (Cris) Hansen of Minneapolis, Jennifer (Steve) Bourgault of Fargo, ND, Jed (Heidi) Hansen of Mankato, Greg (Vicki) Miller of Concord, CA; 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Marie (Roy) Miller; brother, Joachim Dietrich; sisters, Helen Steiner, Pauline Mosbrucker, Katharina Braun, Margaret Ellis, Johanna Mosbrucker, Madeline Johnson and Barbara Dietrich.

Visitation: Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service

Willard Jacobson

Willard Jacobson, 69, of rural Evansville died Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at the Park Health and Rehab Center in St. Louis Park after a valiant fight against cancer for almost four years.

He was born April 19, 1933 in Fergus Falls to William and Alma (Gradin) Jacobson. He was raised in a Christian home and gave his life to Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior in 1964.

He served on church boards and made four mission trips to Mexico distributing Bibles with Key Ministries. He attended country school in Leaf Mountain and graduated from Battle Lake in 1951. He attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis and then worked as a plumber for T.D. Gustafson for 12 years.


In a double wedding on February 10, 1962 he married Elizabeth Ann Fisch in the Little Brown Church at Nashua, IA. In 1964 he returned to the Jacobson Century Farm where he grain farmed and raised livestock for over 30 years. In semi-retirement he worked as a realtor for Investment Realty in Fergus Falls and plumbed in Minneapolis for Tim’s Quality Plumbing.

He was on the Leaf Mountain Town Board for 12 years, volunteered for the Fergus Falls Historical Society and was active in 4-H for 25 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, bowling, photography, gardening and traveling including Norway and Sweden. Most recently he was involved with the Firestarters Ministry of Otter Tail and the Family Church Outreach Ministry in Alexandria. He loved the Lord with all his heart and was happy to tell of his love to anyone he spoke with.

He is survived by his wife, Beth; children, Juleen (Chuck) Walwick and children, Chad and Kevin of Elbow Lake; Jon Jacobson of Minneapolis; Christine Jacobson of Minnetonka; Mary (George) Harper and children, Liz, Anna and Sarah of Minnetonka; Brad (Kristin) Jacobson and daughter, Brena of Fargo, ND and Brian Jacobson of Eden Prairie and sister, Mary Ann (Ralph) Ostlund of Brandon. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation: Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Nilson Funeral Home in Evansville and one hour prior to the service at the church

Service: 2 p.m. Saturday at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Battle Lake

Esther Moll

Esther Moll, 89, of rural Battle Lake died Monday, April 7, 2003 at the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center.

She was born at Eden Valley, MN on March 31,1914 to John L. and Emma (Nemetz) Hamon. She lived in Saskatchewan, Canada for the first few years of her life and then moved to West St. Paul, MN where she grew up and graduated from Humbolt High School.

She married Marvin Moll on January 7, 1942 and during the years of WWII, while he served in England and France, she worked as executive secretary to the president of American Hoist and Derrick in St. Paul. After the war they moved to their farm on Ottertail Lake. After their sons were born, they served Lutheran parishes in Walters, MN and Lindstrom-Stacy, MN before moving back to the farm to stay.

She was a pastor's wife, mother and homemaker - an honorable profession. She was heavily involved in the operation of the family berry farm for more than thirty years. She loved to sew and was involved in making quilts with the church ladies groups and also spent time sewing draperies. She loved to travel and loved growing flowers. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 53 years.

After their sons were grown, they served other Lutheran parishes, the last being at Evansville-Christina Lake, MN. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling, sewing, and reading. She loved and cared deeply about her family and friends.

She is survived by two sons: Robert (Debbie) of Battle Lake, MN and Richard (Jane) of Wardensville, WV; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation: Friday, April 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home in Battle Lake and one hour prior to the service at the church

Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12, at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Battle Lake

Vernon Aune

Vernon Aune, 84, of Fergus Falls died Sunday, April 13, 2003 at Lake Region Hospital.

He was born June 8, 1918 in rural Underwood to John and Inga Aune. He attended Barnhard School near Underwood and Northwestern College in Minneapolis for two years. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on May 13, 1942 where he served with the 168th Engineering Combat Battalion in the campaigns in Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Ribbon and six Overseas Service Bars. He was discharged November 26, 1945.

On December 29, 1945 he married Helen Marjorie Oliver at Winnebago. They lived in Minneapolis where he continued his education at Northwestern College and worked at various jobs. In 1954 they moved to Fergus Falls where he owned and operated Milkways Inc.. He later worked for Mid Am Dairy where he was in charge of transportation and dispatching. He retired in the late 1980's. Helen passed away August 21, 1998. He married Lois Vold on June 22, 2002.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Fergus Falls, the Underwood American Legion and was involved in civic affairs. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was committed to his Lord and joyfully served Him al his days.

He is survived by his wife, Lois of Fergus Falls; daughters, Merilee (Rob) Maiolini of Fergus Falls, Joan (Jerry) Thompson of Colorado Springs, CO and Pamela (Jon) King of Wisdom, MT; four grandchildren, Jessie (Chris) Willard, Jill (Adam) Carter, Kelly Maiolini and Ben Burrington; sisters, Kathryn (Frank) Maiolini of Richville, Ione (Dale) Klaessy of Minnetonka, Gudrun Otto of Buffalo, Mary (Julian) Wold of Fergus Falls and Beverly (Irv) Dennen of Long Boat Key, FL; brothers, John (Bev) Aune of Fergus Falls and Phil (Joyce) Aune of Underwood; brother-in-law, Ben Rhoades of Colorado Springs, CO: Lois’ children, Chris Goforth of Anderson, SC, Peter (Amy) Vold of Plymouth, Tim (Mary) Vold of Watertown, MN, Melody (Ed) Nims of Burnsville and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; infant daughter, Margie Lynn; grandson, Blake Burrington; sisters, Ruth Estes and Char Rhoades and brothers, Lawrence and James.

Visitation: Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Service: 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church
